P E O P L E O F B A R O BARO is in the 'Kouroussa Prefecture' in the Kankan Region, of central Guinea. "FOLI" features Malinke tribe villagers from Baro. The full title of the recording is "FOLI (there is no movement without rhythm) original version by Thomas Roebers and Floris Leeuwenberg" It is a brilliant edit of a film. Filmmaker THOMAS ROEBERS stated: " Life has a rhythm, it's constantly moving. The word for rhythm ( used by the Malinke tribes ) is FOLI. It is a word that encompasses so much more than drumming, dancing or sound. It's found in every part of daily life. In this film you not only hear and feel rhythm but you see it. It's an extraordinary blend of image and sound that feeds the senses and reminds us all how essential it is. " |

The German JAZZ drummer KLAUS WEISS had, in the early 1970's, "become fascinated with the possibility of creating a drum orchestra out of the wealth of Munich ROCK and JAZZ drummers". He ended up establishing and fronting NIAGARA, which many sources now claim to be a KRAUTROCK supergroup. Yet NIAGARA albums really featured "wall of drums" TRIBAL music mixed with JAZZ, FUSION and basic AFROBEAT. The drummers ACK VAN ROOYEN, CHARLES CAMPBELL, COTCH BLACKMON, DAVE KING, FERDINAND POVEL, GARY UNWIN, SABU REX, UDO LINDENBURG, JOE HARRIS, JOSE MARTOS, JUAN ROMERO, KEITH FORSEY, KRISTIAN SCHULTZE, NORMAN TOLBERT, PAUL VINCENT, GEORGE BROWN and UDO LINDENBURG were involved. GARY UNWIN and KEITH FORSEY were both drummers and producers of many classic EURODISCO recordings in the late 1970's and early 1980's. M A R T I N E Z The late SABU MARTINEZ was a New York born conguero and percussionist who has been identified by many sources to be a prominent player in the Cubop movement in the 1950s. His nine albums are LATIN JAZZ gems of highly percussive AFRO-CUBAN music. He also recorded two albums with AMERICAN JAZZ giants: ART BLAKEY AND HIS JAZZ MESSENGERS and the HORACE SILVER TRIO. MAT CAMISON and PIERRE BACHELET were RESONANCE, one of the first supergroups of EURODISCO's "FRENCH SOUND". Their legendary concept album 'The Time Machine' contained classics like "Ok Chicago". We occasionally feature the whole thing here on THE GROOVE. Their 1974 hit "Safari Love" was a popular TRIBAL song that was played in discotheques throughout Europe and Türkiye and Israel. "Safari Love" rolls along with sound effects of African animals like Lions. It was one of the better examples of many tacky TRIBAL DISCO recordings from the early 1970's from acts like NAT ROMAN, THE RITCHIE FAMILY, THE MIGHTY, CHAINO AND HIS AFRICAN PERCUSSION SAFARI, and TROPICAL BAND. |

B I S S O Leaving Cameroun in 1971, JO BISSO would become a major contributor to what was called "The African Music Explosion" in DISCO musics in Europe and North America during the early 1970's. He would continue to produce superb AFRICAN DISCO albums, competing with the likes of MAN DIBANGO, OZILLA, and BLACK SOUL. On his 1978 album 'Mademoiselle' he craft-fully blended EURODISCO with AFRICAN DISCO. He included the pure tribal track "Love Beat" which was evidently played (mixed over and over) continuously by dj's in many South American discotheques. |
