BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPOTLIGHT - DUB - DISCO DUB

In the mid 1970's artists like the DISCO DUB BAND and DAVID BOYDELL from Montreal began to incorporate DUB into standardized DISCO. By the late 1970's it was not uncommon for DISCO recordings from England or the United States to include 'DUB VERSIONS'. The fact of the matter at the time was that many disco enthusiasts then, who were not enamored by REGGAE, strongly suggested that the DUB was just as important to the shaping of the 'disco sound' as it was to that of REGGAE. These were most often starry eyed lovers of the successes of the American Disco Music Industry who had no clue at the time that the music they were obsessing would not have existed at all without the early inventions and innovations of REGGAE, CONGOLESE RUMBA and COMPASS artists. Much of the technological marvel that gave the "hotter-than-hot" sound of disco was massively influenced by the invention of DUB. The influence of DUB inventors Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Errol Thompson were just beginning to be felt! That influence got even more intense in the British Isles where disco acts like SOFT CELL, NEW ORDER and YAZOO offered stimulating DUB VERSIONS of their songs. In fact YAZOO (or YAZ in North America) released such a version of "Situation"; that "Situation Dub" became one of the most popular disco records at the time eventually being sampled by hundreds of producers in the 1980's and early 1990's. Producers are still making DISCO DUB!
