BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPOTLIGHT - DUB - THE INVENTORS

In 1968 a new recording technique was accidently created with Reggae that involved overlapping predominantly instrumental remixes of existing songs and radically manipulating and reshaping those recordings, usually by removing all of or part of the vocals and emphasizing the drum and bass parts - or riddims. Other techniques included adding extensive echo, reverb, panoramic delay, and occasional dubbing of vocals. It was the authentic beginning of the disco remix. The inventors included talents like Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Errol Thompson. Not only did they change the course of Reggae and most disco music, but they started it's own unique genre that has had an influence on popular music throughout the world. In the next four episodes of The Groove we will attempt to show part of the impact of Dub throughout the years, starting with these original "inventors":
