MORE SPACE DISCO

During the 1970's there was a general obsession with the possibilities of space travel and the greatly anticipated introduction to aliens: visitors from outer space. It wasn't surprising that a whole musical movement would evolve out of Europe that was completely preoccupied with that obsession. Combining ROCK with electronic beat patterns and sound effects started the style that would quickly become part of the standard DISCO boom of the mid 1970's. By the late 1970's hundreds of artists from different genres of music would successfully dabble in what was one of the most exciting flavours of DISCO. It was one of the genres that outlasted the ridiculous "death of disco". Conflicting opinions about the SPACE DISCO genre revolve around the different influences of two groups: the Franco-Italian band ROCKETS, and the French group SPACE. The music of ROCKETS (or LES ROCKETS) began as a combination or HEAVY METAL ROCK and ELECTRONIC DISCO. While SPACE offered a pure ELECTRONIC DISCO sound which has been compared to varieties of TRANCE, GOA and TECHNO. After all SPACE DISCO was the first Electronic genre! It is also important to remember the dozens of other amazing acts produced their own SPACE DISCO like ARPADYS, THE DROIDS, FINAL OFFSPRING and SPACE ART in France, AUTOMAT and HERMAN'S ROCKET in Italy, and KEBEKELEKTRIK, THE IMMORTALS, DOGS OF WAR and CHARLIE MIKE SIERRA in Canada. Many other Disco artists like CERRONE, BONEY M, DEE D. JACKSON, MECO and GIORGIO MORODER also offered their own unique takes on SPACE DISCO.

It is so difficult to find Space Disco. I found a couple of Meco albums but the European stuff you are going to play are impossible to find. I'm waiting! :)

My wife and I are enjoying this radiocast very much today. We were teenagers growing up in Napoli where there were special underground parties called the zodiaks that were in different locals each weeks end. they were dark with a dj spinning space disco and lost of lazers. Everyone wore white or space costumes. they were like the raves now without drugs.

Ahhh, I listened to a lot of this style when younger - SPACE's Magic Fly and Ballad for Space Lovers is a well-worn 45 my sister picked up when it was released. Jeff Wayne, MECO, all stuff we had. (I much preferred Meco's side B, Other Galactic Funk, for one... presaging my current taste in psy/trance/goa, maybe?) Much thanks for this blast to the past future past!
