Saturday Morning

Trains, devils, working blues, sleepwalking and generally just playing music while we drift too far from shore results in a heap of trouble where death and taxes await along with part one of the Chancellor Records Story.

After Memphis and the King reigned in the early days of Rock and Roll, Philadelphia took over the mantle in 1957 with a number of labels and performers making headlines. Today we look at the Chancellor Records Story (part one). The heyday of Philly labels lasted from 1957 to 1963 with Cameo, Chancellor and Jamie. The Beatles in 1963, Liverpool and the British invasion brought an end to the focus on the Philly sound.

Anne Lindsay will be giving a free concert at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre on September 29th. Her release Soloworks 2 was composed during the Covid lockdown at St. Anne's church in Toronto but by the time the cd was ready for release, St. Anne's had burned down. Ottawa's Dominion Chalmers is a doppelganger for St. Anne's and a fitting place for this concert.
