The Haskell Free Library and Opera House that straddles the Quebec-US Border has been in the news lately because of restrictions on Canadian access from the US side. Live concerts organized between 1988 and 1993 by two long-time supporters of CKCU (John Henderson and Pippa Hall) were held in the Opera House with the performers on the Canadian side and the audience in the US. They were held to raise money for various charities on both sides of the border. From the archives of Henderson and Hall, we have two sacred harp songs and the closing number of each concert done by a group they created called Borderline Harmony.

Over the next couple of my shows, I will be taking a three part look at the history of Champion Records. Today is part one which features the Blues & Rhythm focus of the early 1950's Nashville label owned by Alan and Reynolds Bubis (and its sister labels Calvert, Kit and Cherokee). Despite not having hits, the label turned out some great music. The other driving force was Ted Jarrett, songwriter and producer.

It's a rainy morning in the nation's capital, a good reason to stay inside and keep your radio locked on 93.1fm

Great show Gord, as always. The Allen Brothers - new to me. Wonderful find. The Allen Brothers I know of are the sons of Red Allen. I wonder if there is a relationship. Loving the show.❤️

Hi Pat - Austin Allen (b. 1901) and his brother Lee (b.1906) were a country duo big in the 1920's and 1930's and were also nicknamed the Chattanooga Boys because many of their songs mentioned Chattanooga. They were one of the first big brother acts in country/old time music. Glad you are enjoying the show!
