Friday Drive
Friday April 19th, 2024 with Trevor Walker
[ReggaeRumbaJazz+SpringCelebration]

Happy Friday "Drivers"! It's Spring and being the eve of 4/20 I figured why not drop some Reggae vibes, since it's been a while. I've also lucked in to some some killer Congolese Rumba and miscellaneous Caribbean grooves that I’m hoping to get into alongside some Jazzy Fusion, Soul & a little House perhaps in hour two if time allows. Thank you for taking the time and indulging me. Hope you all enjoy the selections!

SESSION GROUND RULES
We want to make sure that all of our artists and models are comfortable, respected, and able to work effectively! Here are some ground rules for our Life Drawing sessions to help make that happen.
1. Please keep all electronics off or silenced during the session.
2. Please only enter/exit the session in the breaks between poses.
3. Keep your voices down and conversations to a minimum while the model is posing. We love when local artists connect, but please wait for the halfway break or step outside to do so!
4. Artists own the work they produce during the session, and may share and distribute it how they wish. Models will never be identified by their full names.
5. Under no circumstances is the model to be touched or photographed by artists.
6. Comments, concerns, or feedback about any part of the session should be discussed directly with the facilitator.
If you have any questions or input for our ground rules, send us a message!

Tickets:
Tickets · $17.31 - $22.63www.eventbrite.ca/e/annie-claude-deschenes-tickets-811735271047

Multidisciplinarity is an integral part of Annie-Claude Deschênes’ creative process, who continues her perpetual personal quest of uniting music and performance art by bending the pre-established conventions of stage presence. A key figure on the Montreal independent music scene for almost twenty years, she made her mark as a singer, musician, songwriter, performer and visual artist with Duchess Says and PyPy, two bands that are renowned as much for their electrifying performances as for their artistic sensibility. Her exploratory approach to staging and sound design takes a new direction with the genesis of this solo project: the urgency that characterizes her work remains, but frustration and aggression give way to introspection and vulnerability. Annie-Claude Deschênes explores and reinvents herself under her own name, driven by a constant need to create outside her comfort zone. Inspired by minimal pop and the pioneers of electronic music, Les manières de table, her first solo album due out in spring 2024, is as danceable and melodic as it is disquieting and
dystopian, proposing to set the table differently by deconstructing the social codes of politeness imposed on us.

Avant-garde saxophonist & multireedist Colin Stetson returns to Ottawa for an intimate performance at St Albans Church, joined by sound artist FUJI||||||||||TA

Colin Stetson’s recorded output, not to mention studio and live collaborations – with, among others, Lou Reed, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Chemical Brothers, Bon Iver and Bill Laswell – has proven as prolific as it’s praiseworthy. Since the 21st century’s early years, he’s gained a well-deserved reputation as an exceptional musician, his devotion to craft consummate, his commitment to innovation indisputable. Known for assertive, powerhouse performances on the saxophone – chiefly bass and alto, but also soprano, tenor and baritone – for many years he was a wrestler, a sport whose “insane physical extremes” he credits with his style, alongside, among other things, a love for acts like Pixies and Fugazi. He’s similarly at home, though, whatever the musical context, on clarinet, flute, French Horn and cornet. One might even say he operates in a field all his own.
It was at university that Stetson first began playing regularly, “searching, reaching, and exploring the instrument” with Transmission (later Transmission Trio), before heading to San Francisco after graduating and, six years later, Brooklyn. Contributions were made to other artists’ recordings, not least Tom Waits’, and he made his own lowkey records too. It wasn’t, though, until 2007 that his breakthrough album, New History Warfare Vol. 1, was released, and this coincided with his drafting by Arcade Fire, with whom he’d play until 2010. That year he moved to Montreal to join his future (but now ex-) wife, the band’s Sarah Neufeld, with whom he recorded 2015’s Never Were The Way She Was, and the following year he released Sorrow, an extraordinary reimagining of Gorecki’s legendary Symphony of Sorrow. In-between he completed the New History Warfare trilogy, a virtuosic illustration of the “world-building”, as he calls it, that’s critical to much of his solo work, while 2017’s All This I Do for Glory consolidated his reputation, earning multiple nominations for critics’ Album of the Year lists.
Stetson’s nature is defiantly single-minded, and his dogged focus is always evident, his swooping, circling and soaring motifs displaying as much sensitivity as strength. This is something to which his striking – and diverse – contributions to film, TV and game scores also powerfully attest, including, most recently, 2018’s Hereditary and Red Dead Redemption 2, 2021’s Among The Stars, and 2022’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Menu. As distinguished broadcaster Mary Anne Hobbs once observed, Colin Stetson is “an artist that can change the way you actually think about music.”

FUJI||||||||||TA is a Sound Artist living in Japan. His unique practice utilizes various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and noises. In 2009 Fujita hand fabricated a Pipe Organ that has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Fujita conceived and built it using his imagination, without any prior or specialized knowledge. Designed to create a landscape rather than function as a musical instrument, he took the idea from the Japanese “gagaku”. The air pump (called “FUIGO”) which is kept moving by the left hand when playing, and is based on associations with an ancient blacksmith. This is a unique instrument that Fujita had to learn to play. Recently, he has added a water element, with sound synthesized water tanks, to his performance repertoire. The music consists of water sounds from multiple aquariums alongside his pipe organ and his voice.
Since 2006 he has had many solo performances and collaborative works with musicians, including ∈Y∋ (Boredoms), Akio Suzuki, Keiji Haino, and Koichi Makigami. He has presented his sound installation works in many contexts: the work “CELL”, which made audible the sounds of black soldier fly maggots buried in dirt, was exhibited in Sapporo International Art Festival 2017 and attracted a great deal of interest in Fujita’s artistic practice. A performance with an organ and 4 water tanks were performed in MODE (London) in 2019. In 2020, he released the albums “iki” [Hallow Ground] and “KŌMORI” [Boomkat Editions]

FK ANYWAY (Nervous Records - Trax Records - King Street - GoDeeva Records - Ibiza Undreground - Phunk Traxx - Rezongar Music)

BIO - Flavio Kirilli, aka FK ANYWAY:
From an early age, Flavio was a lover of music and all it encompassed. All the nuances of sounds and the intricacies of a musical composition is where he found his happy place and it has helped form his unique, creative ear. His first step towards being a dj, was at age 16 when he bought his first console and played in a few clubs, where he grew up in the South of Italy. This gave him a real taste of what was soon to become an insatiable passion. In 2002, he moved to Riccione where the best clubs and nightlife were located, setting up shop to make his mark. Working in a top record store by day; producing and playing by night, his knowledge and taste in music were expanding and all the hard work was paying off.

For over 30 years Flavio has been rocking dance floors in clubs all over the world. Bookings in Italy include: Matis, Pascià, Echoes, Divinae Follie, Kamaloca, Nafoura, Peter, Villa delle Rose, PickUp, Miu J’Adore, Chalet delle Rose, Des Alpes, Meet Compact Club, Vanilla, and at international hot spots 43 Scott (Brooklyn-NY), The Door (NYC), NiteFlight (Liebnitz, Austria), Fiesta Club (Brussels), Penthouse (Copenhagen) among others. Flavio hosts his own radio show SUBTERRANEA every week with guest djs. He has been a guest on other radio shows such as: Rhythm is Rhythm, Ibiza Global Radio, NYC House Radio and many others.

As a person, Flavio is solid! He is professional and takes his music very seriously. Watching the dancefloor go wild is a rewarding feeling and one that he always strives for. He becomes the maestro, taking the crowd on a musical journey when he plays. With an infectious smile and great attitude on life, it’s all about the vibe.

Do you like to dancey-dance? Do you like to party-party?
The German Sparkle Party theme is inspired by a worldwide sensation music video of the same name by "The Something Experience". This is our chance every year to be silly and outrageous, let loose and have fun.

WATCH THE VIDEO, GET INSPIRED:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-jN3vH26NQ

SO, WHAT IS IT?
A German Sparkle Party (GSP) is a fun and frolicsome celebration of all things shiny, blinky, glowy and dazzly, set to a soundtrack of the best underground house and techno the city has to offer. Trust us... it's the PERFECT bright and light-hearted way to celebrate the arrival of spring after the dark winter months that seem to drag on forever in the national capital region.

AND, WHAT DO I WEAR?
SPARKLE PARTY COSTUMES, fun and bright outfits are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED! This year's theme is "Glitz & Glam"...

glitz (ɡlɪts)
noun
ostentatious showiness; gaudiness or glitter
*
glam (glæm)
adjective
Flamboyant, extravagantly flashy glamour; Relating to glam rock.
*
GLITZ: All the glittering and sparkling extravagance of Hollywood fashion, filled with metallics, sequins... the more ostentatious the better! Just let your imagination run wild!
GLAM: David Bowie was a pioneer of this fashion trend; glam rock men and women embraced metallics, ruffles, satin blouses, bold colours, tight pants, platform shoes, unique makeup and dyed hair.
Watch the German Sparkle Party video linked above to get some great ideas for your outfit - you'll be inspired along with us to rock sparkly accessories and makeup, rubber boots and of course your party pants!

FREE ACCESSORIES!
Do you feel you need some more sparkle in your step, more flash in your Friday night? As always, we'll set up our ever-popular SPARKLE STATION, allowing the woefully unprepared to get into the theme with some complimentary sparkle accessories.

Ottawa Jazz Festival presents: Lake Street Dive
Thursday, June 27 | Main Stage, Confederation Park | 8:30pm

Purchase online: ottawajazzfestival.com/tickets
Since forming in 2004, Lake Street Dive have matched their sophisticated musicianship with a fearless refusal to limit their sound. As shown on their most recent full-length album, 2021‘s critically acclaimed Obviously, the Boston-bred band also possess a keen talent for combining sociopolitical commentary with immediately catchy pop gems. With their current lineup comprised of founding members Rachael Price (vocals), Bridget Kearney (bass), and Michael Calabrese (drums) — as well as keyboardist/vocalist Akie Bermiss and touring guitarist James Cornelison — Lake Street Dive continue to create joyously soulful rock & roll with equal parts ingenuity, intelligence, and irresistible abandon.
Although a certain spirited eclecticism has defined Lake Street Dive since their earliest days, the band‘s four original members (including former guitarist/trumpet player Michael “McDuck” Olson) first crossed paths while studying jazz at Boston‘s New England Conservatory of Music. Their full-length debut In This Episode… arrived in 2007, followed by three more independently released and rapturously received albums. As the band‘s energetic live show continued to earn them a devoted following, Lake Street Dive made their Nonesuch Records debut with Side Pony: a 2016 effort that instantly shot to No. 1 on three Billboard charts and later landed on Paste‘s 50 Best Albums of 2016 list.
The following year, the group experienced a new infusion of creative energy with the addition of Bermiss (previously their touring keyboardist), who has since begun sharing writing and arrangement duties. Arriving in 2018, Lake Street Dive‘s self-produced sixth album Free Yourself Up debuted in the top ten on the Billboard 200 and spent seven-and-a-half months on the non-commercial radio charts, with the smoldering hit single “Good Kisser” holding steady in the top five at Americana radio for over a month.
In recent years, Lake Street Dive have brought even more boldness to their kaleidoscopic sound while deliberately expanding their songcraft. To that end, Obviously finds the band examining such complex matters as gender inequality (on “Being a Woman”) and the monumental challenges faced by younger generations (on “Making Do”), shaping each track with a profound intentionality and ineffable mastery of melody and groove — a process Price refers to as “putting these messages into three and a half minute snippets, dropping whatever truth we can and hoping it‘s the type of thing that people want to ruminate on.” Made with producer Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Mary J. Blige), the result is an endlessly illuminating body of work that‘s earned praise from the likes of Rolling Stone (who noted that “[a]t a moment when pop strives for lo-fi, solitary-world intimacy, the jazz-pop-whatever band refuse to think small”).
Last fall, to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their first covers EP, Lake Street Dive released Fun Machine: The Sequel, a 6-track EP of cover songs produced by Robin MacMillan and recorded at Figure 8 Recording in Brooklyn and Lucy‘s Meat Market in Los Angeles. This new collection of songs reveals what makes the group so unique and their curations so special. Lake Street Dive don‘t just inhabit these interpretations; they knock the walls down, re-finish the floors, and on some of them add a new room or two — it‘s a way to both acknowledge their inspirations while also advancing their own musical foundation, inspiring a new generation of fans along the way. And as always, it‘s their signature combination of immaculate musicianship, exceptional, inventive chops, and free-wheeling, playful sense of fun and originality leading the way.
Over the years, they‘ve captivated massive audiences at such esteemed festivals as Newport Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Toronto Jazz Festival, in addition to headlining tours all across the globe and sharing stages with acts like Brandi Carlile and Sheryl Crow. And through their fierce commitment to constantly elevating their artistry, Lake Street Dive have ultimately emerged as one of the most compelling voices in alternative music today, both reliably sublime and thrilling unpredictable.

Nice I have not heard that Barrington Levy tune for so long. It was always one of my faves!! I am going to send a link for that Ziggy tune to my friends kids. They will love it and probably will sing it all summer. Thanks, Trev

This is early Congolese Rumba. Sounds great. I checked on Discogs, and it seems to come from a comp. 1977. Lucky find.
