Friday Drive
Friday October 17th, 2025 with Trevor Waker
[D’AngeloTributeMixtape&SumChoonz]

Not sure if many of you are aware but we’ve lost yet another amazing artist in the passing of D’Angelo to the scourge of cancer just this past Tuesday on October 14 at only 51 years young. I’ll be dedicating the first hour of this week’s “Drive” by sampling from his first two releases, sadly the only ones I possess, with a few selections from “Brown Sugar” and a major focus on “Voodoo” for the “unwinding” portion of the show. You’ll also find a few links in the show’s description to D’Angelo’s discography, bio and performances for anyone who wants to dig a little deeper. From Discogs: “Micheal Eugene Archer, better known by his stage name D’Angelo, was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer associated with the neo-soul movement circa the mid-90s. In his teens he won the amateur talent competition at Harlem's Apollo Theater three weeks in a row. His debut solo album, Brown Sugar (1995), received widespread acclaim and sold over two million copies. His next album, Voodoo (2000), debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. Its lead single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," entered the R&B charts and won a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal; likewise, Voodoo won Best R&B Album. D'Angelo was hailed as the next Marvin Gaye by GQ in 2014 and released his third studio album, Black Messiah, in 2014. The album was met with critical acclaim and fared well on music charts, peaking at number five on the US Billboard 2000.” In hour two I’ll be dropping a mix of various uptempo grooves to wind you up for your weekend. Happy listening, thank you all for taking the time and hope you enjoy this week’s offering. Let’s go and keep it locked! Hey Neil & Dance the D'Angelo tribute had to be done and you're most welcome. I used to have a CKCU email but never truly use it and can't remember what it is at the moment. D'Angelo channeled those influences dutifully and beautifully.
