Happy Friday “Drivers” fam!
After hearing of the loss of one of my favourite vocalists, Andy Bey who left us on April 26 at 85 years young, I knew I had to do a tribute of sorts to pay homage to his contribution to the soul / spiritual jazz scene over the years.
The tricky part was compiling enough of a body of his work to fill this two hour slot, while only possessing one of his solo releases.
I simply rarely come across any of his solo material while digging in the wild.
That being said my introduction to Andy Bey was through his contributions to a couple of my favourite’s artists work, namely Gary Bartz and Horace Silver, of which I’ll be leaning heavily to bring you this broadcast.
Apparently, he was known to be one of John Coltrane’s favourite vocalist which isn’t difficult to understand when listening to any of his performances.
My first introduction to Andy Bey was his epic delivery on Gary Bartz NTU Troop’s “Celestial Blues” which has been covered, remade and remixed numerous times by various artists including our very own Souljazz Orchestra on the album “Inner Fire”.
Celestial Blues remains a personal anthem I try to feature as often as possible in many of it’s reiterations, though the original “Gary Bartz NTU Troop” version remains my personal favourite.
