Friday Drive
Friday November 15th, 2024 with Trevor Waker
[PaybackEpisode1of50LouDonaldson&RoyHaynesTribute]

Happy Friday “Driver” friends and happy 50th birthday to CKCU! Today’s show is going to be a very jazz oriented episode featuring some of my favourite tunes. With the recent passing of two jazz greats namely, the legendary drummer Roy Haynes on November 12th and equally legendary saxophonist Lou Donaldson on November 9th I figured let’s hear some of their gifts for a couple of hours. Wanted to write a little note to thank everyone who took the time to tune in during during CKCU’s 46th annual funding drive helping the “Friday Drive” raise $3342.55 of my $5000 goal in contribution to the drive goal total of $160,003.41 so far of the drive’s total goal of $175,000! Can’t properly express my gratitude to all of you who stepped up by making your pledge helping us get so close to our funding drive goal. You can still donate directly to your favourite show for a limited time by clicking the donate button on the CKCU website ckcufm.com (below) https://www.canadahelps.org/me/64Z4muwJ As is customary every year here’s the roll call of gratitude and shout out all of you who stepped up in support. - Ryan Bresee (long time CKCU volunteer & host of “Whatever’s Cool With Me” Thursdays 9:30 - noon) - Anonymous #1 - Mark Meurin - Richard white - Neil McLeod (Neil & His Dancing Labrador double donation) - Kevin Pickles - Robin Dunbar - Katerine Cardin, Pablito, Mimi & Coco - Phil Jenkins - Andrew Pakuts (CKCU volunteer, host of “Lost In Bass” Tuesdays midnight - 2 AM) - Allan Wigney - Ann Rickenbacker - Sonia Vani - Adam Hannibal (Balanced Records in Winnipeg) - Heavy Ben (CKCU *super volunteer & rotating host of “In A Mellow Tone” Wednesdays 9 - 11 PM, “Chance Meeting” alternate Fridays 3 - 4 PM & rotating host of “Heavy Friends” Saturdays 8 - 10 PM) - Paul Spaniel - Ethan Anderman - Johanna Murphy - Robert Woods - Dana Wiesbrock - Marc-André Lorrain - Candace Nelson (CKCU *super volunteer & host of “Candyshop” Fridays 4 - 5 PM) - Gordon Walker (thanks Dad) - Scruffy_SacSoundZystem (long time listener / supporter Ottawa ex pat living in Finland) - Beatrix Picard (thanks Trriixxiie) - Wyatt Boyd (One of my favourite suppliers of my “Black Crack” addiction) - Jeff Griffiths - Diane Dubois - John Tackaberry (long time CKCU *super volunteer & host of the legendary “Black And Blues” Sundays 9 - 11 PM) - David Dalle (long time volunteer & host of “The David Dalle Show” Thursdays 2 - 4 PM) - Curtis Smith (CKCU Alumni and former host of “Souled Out” previously aired Saturdays 10 - midnight) - Rami Abu Shammeh - Rick & Miranda (White Rabbit Events) - Randy Williams - Stacy Bleeks - Marcel Brugger - Manmohan Panesar (long time CKCU volunteer & rotating host of “This Island Earth” Sundays 1 - 4 PM) - Andres Castro - Anonymous #2 - Stephen Martin - Mark Murphy - Elorious Cain (long time volunteer and legendary host of “The Groove” Saturdays 1 - 3 PM) - Patrik Hunt (Kaffe 1870) - Lawrence Henderson - Fazal Sadikali (CEO of the SAIRYÕ Digital Platform) - Mark Searl - Mark Kielty - Glenn, Maya, Sophia, Carter & Charlotte Walker (Thanks brother) In our first hour, although I, sadly, only own one of his solo recordings, the 1972 release “Senya” on “Mainstream”, I do have a few of the seminal recordings he appears on from such greats as “Pharaoh Sanders” and “Leon Thomas” and “Bud Powell” who I’m quite sure are all currently jamming together right now somewhere in another dimension. I’ve included a couple of from each links for anyone interested. From Discogs: Roy Owen Haynes (born March 13, 1925, in Roxbury, Massachusetts; died November 12, 2024 in Nassau County, N.Y.) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader.

Haynes began his full time professional career in 1945. From 1947 to 1949 he worked with saxophonist Lester Young, and from 1949 to 1952 was a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker's quintet. He also recorded at the time with pianist Bud Powell and saxophonists Wardell Gray, and Stan Getz. From 1953 to 1958 he toured with singer Sarah Vaughan. Haynes went on to work with more experimental musicians, like saxophonists John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy, or pianists Chick Corea and Andrew Hill.

Haynes has recorded or performed with Gary Burton, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Henry Grimes, Christian McBride, Jackie McLean, Pat Metheny, Thelonious Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Horace Tapscott and many others. He has also led his own groups, some performing under the name Hip Ensemble. His most recent recordings as a leader are Fountain of Youth and Whereas, both of which have been nominated for a Grammy Award. Well into late 2008, Haynes was still continuing to perform worldwide and on December 22, 2010, he was named a recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Haynes received the award at the Special Merit Awards Ceremony & Nominees Reception of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on February 12, 2011. Discography: https://www.discogs.com/artist/255556-Roy-Haynes?superFilter=Releases Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Haynes In hour two we’ll be exploring the limited discography I possess from “Lou Donaldson” primarily from his solo “Blue Note” releases from which I’ll be focusing mostly on his original compositions particularly the Soul-Jazz-Funk end of things with perhaps a touch of Bop. From Wiki: Louis Andrew Donaldson Jr. (November 1, 1926 – November 9, 2024) was an American jazz alto saxophonist. He was best known for his soulful, bluesy approach to playing the alto saxophone, although in his formative years he was heavily influenced by Charlie Parker, as were many during the bebop era. Donaldson was born in Badin, North Carolina, on November 1, 1926.[2][1] He attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro[3] in the early 1940s. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was trained at the Great Lakes bases in Chicago where he was introduced to bop music in the lively club scene. In 2018, he declared himself retired, having performed his final shows in 2017. On November 2, 2021, he made a public appearance at a 95th birthday tribute show at Dizzy's Club in Manhattan, New York City. Lou appeared at his 96th and 97th birthday tribute shows in 2022 and 2023, but opted not to travel to New York City for his 98th birthday celebration, due to a bout of pneumonia.[10][11] Shortly afterward, he died from pneumonia at a hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida, on November 9, 2024. Marc Decho’s Forget the World is a psychedelic instrumental trio based in Toronto, Canada. The group is the brainchild of composer and electric bassist Marc Decho, also known for his work with legendary Afro-Cuban jazz pianist Miguel de Armas. The group performs original expansive music that straddles the line between '70s soul-jazz, alternative hip-hop, cinematic soundscapes, UK drum and bass, afro-latin, classical and experimental electronica. All in all, forging together a sound that is undeniably unique.
“Hopefully, my music inspires some kind of other awareness or consciousness—another world to escape to.” Marc Decho
The show will coincide with the groups debut album coming out in early 2025. The first single will drop later next month.

Neil and his Dancing Labrador
Probably my fave song of all time, Trev. Here comes $25 for a Mighty 93.1 Birthday present. Be Thankful For What You've Got. I need this mix. I am thankful that Drake is eating and starting to walk again. I though I had lost my boy this past 9 days but The Dancing Labrador is "back on the dancefloor soon. Praise God for watching over us this past stretch. Special thx to William DeVaughn.

Hey Neil and his Dancing Labrador, very glad to oblige and it's the least I can do as a small payback for all the support over the years. I'm glad to hear Drake Is on the road to recovery and sorry that you had a scare. Big thanks to Mr. DeVaughn and of course to you for upping your contribution for a third time this drive. Massive blessings my friend!

Neil & The Dancing Labrador
Thanks for all the links and research Trev. Although I had many of these recordings in my collection before the flood, it is such a treat to enjoy them once again this evening. This is a playlist I would have put together and probably did at home, but not necessarily in the same order but everyone of these tracks so far tonight were in regular rotation at home. And I love reading background on artists that have impacted my life leaving an indelible mark on my musical heart !

Neil & the Dancing Labrador, I'm mourning the loss of your collection right with you. One of my biggest fears is a flood in my basement and having to go through that kind of loss. Again, so glad to be able to oblige.

Hi. Technically, i am a monthly donor to CKCU. Being of modest means, it is easier for me, this way. I end up donating more. Monthly, i also support KPFA, KCRW, WBGO and Democracy Now. It is because of shows like yours that i do this. Thank you. If you do a search for Lou Donaldson on All About Jazz, there is an interview with the man...

Hey robert p in gatineau, fully appreciate your contributions to CKCU and your kind words. I'll post the link recommendation in the description for all to access. Thank you for the tip!
