SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 2024 AT 12 PM
First Annual True North Eager Beaver MENtal Health Walk
@Canadian Museum of Nature
240 McLeod St.
Event:
https://www.facebook.com/share/aBQUJs9N8q4AyCGV/

Studies have shown that when asked with whom it is they talk when they are going through tough times, most men reply: "Nobody!"
We would like to change that.
Inspired by Walk for a Bloke in Australia, our MENtal Health Walk encourages male-identifying people, from coast to coast to coast, to invite other male-identifying people out for a good walk on June 15th, and make time to discuss their mental health.
Of course, the event is not-limited to male-identifying people only. We very strongly encourage female-identifying and genderqueer Canadians to also "walk for the men in their lives", invite them for a walk, organize a small group to walk together, or agree to be the walk partner of someone who asks you.
While on the walk, take a few pictures, share them, and the reason for which you walked, to our social media sites (this page, the True North Eager Beaver Facebook page, or @TrueEager on X) using "#MENtalHealthWalk".
If you are in Ottawa, join us in the parking lot of the Canadian Museum of Nature [240 McLeod St.] for noon on the day, and we can walk together.
If you are in Ottawa, but can't join us at that time, do make your own time on June 15th, to walk.
The Honourable Senator Patrick Brazeau and his spouse have graciously agreed to walk with us and lend their good names to our event.
Following the walk, we will host, starting at 3 p.m. EDT our monthly PubCast show, LIVE from the Lieutenant's Pump in Ottawa, with the Senator and his spouse as our guest, and we will speak of men's mental health.
The event will be broadcast on our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@truenortheagerbeavermedia [subscribe today, to be sure you don't miss it!]
Please note that out of respect for the Senator's sobriety, though it is happening at a Pub, all participants in the broadcast have agreed that it will be a 'dry' show, while the Senator is with us.
The purpose of this first edition of the #MENtalHealthWalk is primarily to raise awareness, but we also hope to raise a little bit of money, if possible.
If you would like to solicit donations from friends and family for your walk, or make a donation yourself, we will have soon-to-be-announced community beneficiaries and portals via which you can donate.
Finally, our super stylish MENtal Health Walk t-shirts are also ready. You can get yours for $35 (tax and shipping, within Canada, included), with all net proceeds going to our beneficiaries.
If you want yours, send an e-transfer with your shirt size [we can do 2XL and kids sizes, if requested] to truenortheagerbeaver@gmail.com.
Though our first walk is being put together rapidly, so that we can do it on Father's Day Weekend, we do plan for it to become an annual event that will grow over time to truly be a coast to coast to coast happening.
Thanks to the enthusiasm of so many, this year's event is already way larger and ambitious than we had hoped it would be when we started.
Let's get together and make good things grow.
Be kind to, and gentle with, yourself,
Your Mr. Beaver and Mr. Grizzly

FLiM (Maetta | Mainframe Artists)
www.djflim.com
soundcloud.com/djflimofficial
beatport.com/artist/flm/1070658

BIO:
Hailing from Thailand’s southern region, Flim has for the past twenty-five years been passionately contributing to the global techno scene, bringing his high-energy performances and abstract energetic productions to dance-floors throughout the world.
Trained originally as a rock drummer, Flim became attracted to the tribal sounds of techno early on, and could soon be found deejaying in venues throughout the infamous southern islands of Koh-Samui and Koh-Panghan. His infectious and energetic performances proved addictive, leading to residencies at Thailand’s world-renowned Full Moon, Black Moon, and Half Moon parties!
After relocating to the epicenter of electronic music in Canada – Toronto, he founded Blackmoon Productions, quickly making his name synonymous with Canada’s free tekno scene thanks to his memorable squat parties and deep talent for keeping dance-floors moving. Before long, Flim was gracing premier electronic clubs such as Montreal’s Circus, and Toronto’s Circa, as well as top tier Canadian festivals such as WEMF, and the Eclipse Festival.
In the studio, Flim was also building an international fan base. Quietly perfecting his production technique, he joined the roster of Henry Cullen & Pattrix’s stripped down UK label Mutate to Survive, for the release of his first EP, Killing It. Setting the tone for what has become a signature cross-genre brand of techno, the EP mixed the best sounds of minimal, tribal and hard-groove together into a fresh sound not to be missed whether played in the club or on the home stereo. A year later, Flim continued with the release of the EP, New Planet, again on Mutate to Survive. Quickly gaining traction in the international electronic community, New Planet was featured in France’s renowned music magazine Tsugi, it appeared on French artists The Hacker’s Top 10 Chart, and cracked Beatport’s Top 50 globally. Building on this success, Flim teamed up with Toronto’s Jane Void to produce the unusual sounding minimal floor grinder, Press My Button. Featuring Void’s distorted vocals, the track originally aired on French national radio Oui FM, and has since been hitting dance-floors worldwide.
Behind the decks, Flim has become renowned for bringing the energy, charisma and sound that only a seasoned producer and deejay can. From dark vibes and slamming beats, to rolling climaxes and funky grooves, Flim perfectly blends his original production tracks with other ground breaking techno, making his international performances a must see event that will keep people talking long after the music has stopped.

White Rabbit honcho Rick Laplante is on opening duties for our headliner. Our featured #HoppyHour DJ is also making his White Rabbit Ottawa debut: Cole Huyssen!

Festa Junina, São João or the June Festival, are a few names of this type of celebration used in Brazil - a Portuguese Catholic tradition that was introduced to Brazil hundreds of years ago. Its events are based on the European Midsummer festivities celebrating the harvest and the saints (Saint Anthony, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Peter). Despite its religious origins, the significance of Festa Junina is that of a large social gathering with dance, drinks, and of course food.
June is also a month to honor rain, the harvest season, and marital union. These celebrations feature typical Brazilian food and participants dress up like farmers, enjoy bonfires and dance the Quadrilha, a typical square dance.
This event has the promotional support of Saravah.ca. Saravah is a non profit in Ottawa dedicated to organizing and promoting Brazilian culturally diverse events and supports the settlement of Brazilian newcomers in Ottawa.

Ottawa Jazz Festival presents: Lake Street Dive
Thursday, June 27 | Main Stage, Confederation Park | 8:30pm

Purchase online: ottawajazzfestival.com/tickets
Since forming in 2004, Lake Street Dive have matched their sophisticated musicianship with a fearless refusal to limit their sound. As shown on their most recent full-length album, 2021‘s critically acclaimed Obviously, the Boston-bred band also possess a keen talent for combining sociopolitical commentary with immediately catchy pop gems. With their current lineup comprised of founding members Rachael Price (vocals), Bridget Kearney (bass), and Michael Calabrese (drums) — as well as keyboardist/vocalist Akie Bermiss and touring guitarist James Cornelison — Lake Street Dive continue to create joyously soulful rock & roll with equal parts ingenuity, intelligence, and irresistible abandon.
Although a certain spirited eclecticism has defined Lake Street Dive since their earliest days, the band‘s four original members (including former guitarist/trumpet player Michael “McDuck” Olson) first crossed paths while studying jazz at Boston‘s New England Conservatory of Music. Their full-length debut In This Episode… arrived in 2007, followed by three more independently released and rapturously received albums. As the band‘s energetic live show continued to earn them a devoted following, Lake Street Dive made their Nonesuch Records debut with Side Pony: a 2016 effort that instantly shot to No. 1 on three Billboard charts and later landed on Paste‘s 50 Best Albums of 2016 list.
The following year, the group experienced a new infusion of creative energy with the addition of Bermiss (previously their touring keyboardist), who has since begun sharing writing and arrangement duties. Arriving in 2018, Lake Street Dive‘s self-produced sixth album Free Yourself Up debuted in the top ten on the Billboard 200 and spent seven-and-a-half months on the non-commercial radio charts, with the smoldering hit single “Good Kisser” holding steady in the top five at Americana radio for over a month.
In recent years, Lake Street Dive have brought even more boldness to their kaleidoscopic sound while deliberately expanding their songcraft. To that end, Obviously finds the band examining such complex matters as gender inequality (on “Being a Woman”) and the monumental challenges faced by younger generations (on “Making Do”), shaping each track with a profound intentionality and ineffable mastery of melody and groove — a process Price refers to as “putting these messages into three and a half minute snippets, dropping whatever truth we can and hoping it‘s the type of thing that people want to ruminate on.” Made with producer Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Mary J. Blige), the result is an endlessly illuminating body of work that‘s earned praise from the likes of Rolling Stone (who noted that “[a]t a moment when pop strives for lo-fi, solitary-world intimacy, the jazz-pop-whatever band refuse to think small”).
Last fall, to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their first covers EP, Lake Street Dive released Fun Machine: The Sequel, a 6-track EP of cover songs produced by Robin MacMillan and recorded at Figure 8 Recording in Brooklyn and Lucy‘s Meat Market in Los Angeles. This new collection of songs reveals what makes the group so unique and their curations so special. Lake Street Dive don‘t just inhabit these interpretations; they knock the walls down, re-finish the floors, and on some of them add a new room or two — it‘s a way to both acknowledge their inspirations while also advancing their own musical foundation, inspiring a new generation of fans along the way. And as always, it‘s their signature combination of immaculate musicianship, exceptional, inventive chops, and free-wheeling, playful sense of fun and originality leading the way.
Over the years, they‘ve captivated massive audiences at such esteemed festivals as Newport Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Toronto Jazz Festival, in addition to headlining tours all across the globe and sharing stages with acts like Brandi Carlile and Sheryl Crow. And through their fierce commitment to constantly elevating their artistry, Lake Street Dive have ultimately emerged as one of the most compelling voices in alternative music today, both reliably sublime and thrilling unpredictable.

Formed in 2018, Gilsons is the musical collaboration of Francisco, João, and José Gil, blending influences of pop rock, samba, reggae, and Bahian rhythms, while paying homage to the classic MPB of their father and grandfather, Gilberto Gil. With successful releases like “Várias Queixas” and “Devagarinho,” the band's debut album Pra Gente Acordar has garnered attention, earning a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Pop Album in Portuguese Language. The trio, after participating in major festivals across Brazil, recently graced the Sunset Stage at Rock In Rio alongside Jorge Aragão, captivating an audience of over 100,000 people. Excitingly, they are confirmed for the Lollapalooza Brazil 2023 lineup.
What is MPB?
MPB stands for “Música Popular Brasileira,” which translates to “Brazilian Popular Music” in English. It is a genre that encompasses a broad spectrum of Brazilian music styles, including bossa nova, samba, tropicália, and other popular music genres. MPB emerged in the 1960s and has been a significant cultural and musical movement in Brazil, blending traditional Brazilian rhythms with modern influences and often incorporating socially and politically charged lyrics. Artists like Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, and Tom Jobim are associated with the MPB genre.
***
