*Update:
I mistakenly mentioned that the "Atlantis Jazz Ensemble" LP is available locally at finer record shops but isn't actually going to be released until October 27, officially and won't be available until then.
Very sorry for any inconvenience, my bad....
Happy Friday Drivers!
On this week’s show I have the distinguished honour and privilege of sampling some hot new local releases from members of Ottawa’s treasured Souljazz Orchestra family.
First up Pierre Chretien’s project, the newly released Atlantis Jazz Ensemble’s sophomore album “Celestial Suite” featuring local legends Ed Lister (trumpet), Zakari Frantz (tenor sax), Chris Pond (Bass) and Mike Essoudry (drums).
“Celestial Suite” is currently available at local shops on vinyl or pre-order for the time being through Bandcamp for all your digital copies or if not in the Ottawa area.
I’ve also get a taste from a truly advanced test pressing via Phil Motion and Ray Tabana’s project, Dystoh’s.
Sampling from their forthcoming album “Heat Of The Times” which isn’t actually scheduled for release until April, 2024.
This listening party will be filling our first hour, the unwind from the week portion of the “Drive”.
In our second hour I’ll be featuring the usual / unusual weekend warm up freestyle of tunes that surfaced while pulling for the show and sorting music for this weekend.
The second hour I’ll be leaning to some dance floor Jazz, Funk & Brasilian fusion with a taste of Afro and funky Disco Soul.
Some nice vibes to wind you all up for this weekend.
As always, thank you for taking the time to be here, happy listening and I hope you enjoy the show.

We are both in agreement that neither of us have a night to truly dig deep into the crates and push the limits musically and tend to have a lot of fun plus nice chemistry on the decks as well as some of the deepest DJ crates in the city, music for days, figured Lounge 164 would be a good place for a tester session. This project is the brain child of local photographer David D Pistol. The project is a celebration of the National Capital Region's (NCR) hip-hop culture, movement, and community. We are looking forward to gather everyone together across generations for a group photo. We understand that many who contributed to the scene are unfortunately no longer with us, but we will be commemorating their contributions and memories in the project. Have you made contributions to the NCR'hip-hop culture over the last 40 years? If yes, you are invited to take part in what promises to be a historical hip-hop multimedia project. The project is inspired by Art Kane's photograph "A Great Day in Harlem (1958)". Over the years there have been multiple remakes, most notably the late great Gordon Park's "A Great Day in Hip Hop" taken in 1997 for XXL Magazine. With his sextet Turboprop Cervini flexes his arranging muscles, creating a vast landscape of musical textures, and moods on which these monster musicians can play. The band features many of Canada’s finest and most in-demand musicians; Tara Davidson on Alto Saxophone, Kelly Jefferson on Tenor Saxophone, William Carn on Trombone, Adrean Farrugia on Piano, Michael Herring on Bass and Cervini on Drums. The band's sound is reminiscent to the hard swinging Jazz Messenger bands of Art Blakey, although they tackle a wide range of music; from Charlie Parker to Claude Debussy to Radiohead, plus originals from all the band members. They have already toured across Canada multiple times to rave reviews, and released their JUNO-award winning third album, Abundance, on ANZIC Records (NYC) in the fall of 2018. MUDITA Comprised of guitarist Roddy Elllias and Petr Cancura on woodwinds, Mudiat explores crossing boundaries between jazz, improv and worldly folk melodies. These world class musicians have been on a musical journey of creating authentic, transcendent music, with an almost telepathic connection. Reminiscent of ECM recordings, Mudita seeks to create sonic warmth and memorable melodies in the hands of two master musicians. Roddy Ellias - His music has been described as “unapologetically beautiful” (All About Jazz) and his creativity “both startling and inspiring” (Just Jazz Guitar). A passionate improviser and prolific composer, Canadian guitarist Roddy Ellias is an artist whose work defies simple definition. His musical journey has taken him from his early roots in pop and R&B bands and classical music, to the improvised world of jazz, through African and other world beats all the way to writing an opera, and everything in between. Along the way he’s performed with some of the great names in music, from Cleo Laine, Michel Legrand, the Montreal Symphony, the NAC Orchestra, Lee Konitz and David Liebman to Joel Frahm and Dr. Lonny Johnston and many more. Petr Cancura - Petr Cancura’s aesthetic blends roots music and jazz to create an authentic, fresh and raw sound. Petr’s Down Home was nominated for the 2015 Best Instrumental Album JUNO, and awarded the Independent Music Award for Best Instrumental Album of the Year. Petr’s most recent album releases include a roots-inspired quartet record on vinyl featuring Kenny Wollesen and Tony Scherr, a cinema/avante-garde induced quartet record featuring Jesse Zubot, Gordon Grdina and Jean Martin and a trio recording featuring the great Charlie Hunter and Geoff Clapp recorded in North Carolina and an early rock and roll inspired trio recording with Charlie Hunter and George Sluppick. Petr has played with everyone from Aretha Franklin, to Danilo Perez and Julian Lage amongst many more.
