Friday Drive
Friday April 7th, 2023 with Trevor Walker
[GoodFridayDrive]

Happy Good Friday Drivers! Not much of an Easter special but lots of great music to share and hopefully providing some vibes for your long weekend. I've pulled a nice selection of eclectic grooves starting off with some downtempo dubby vibes, Nujazz Funk and old and new soul while speeding up the tempo throughout with some more dance floor foot tapping head nodders in the second hour. Happy listening! Enjoy.

Dreammind Group & Kapacity Entertainment present
SKRATCH BASTID
at BERLIN inside 56 ByWard
on Friday April 7th, 2023 @ 10pm
For the past two decades, Skratch Bastid has been rocking parties and wowing crowds all over the globe, becoming one of the world`s best-known and most-loved DJs. Known for his electric stage presence, technical prowess and versatile selections that span the complete musical spectrum—from hip hop to house, disco to dancehall, reggae to funk and back again—Bastid is a true crowd favourite with an unrivaled ability to create unforgettable moments with music. From humble beginnings in Bedford, Nova Scotia, Bastid cut his teeth in the battle scene of the late 90s and early 2000s, competing in the DMcs, ITF and Scribble Jam. The latter produced one of his most iconic moments, the "Imperial March" routine that became his first brush with viral fame, and has over 7 million views on YouTube alone (and countless others from before social media even officially existed). And while he`s clearly always had a knack for creating shareable videos, Bastid proved early on that he offered much more than just impressive tricks. His demanding touring schedule has brought him all over the world, sometimes playing up to 200 shows a year in over 50 countries. When he`s not keeping dance floors moving behind the decks, he`s also an accomplished producer with multiple Juno nominations, known for his collaborations with artists like Shad and DJ Jazzy Jeff. In addition to his genius as a DJ, Bastid has been expanding his empire into many other successful creative ventures, including his Skratch School DJ School, his eponymous line of hot sauces and of course, the infamous Bastid`s BBQ. This beloved traveling party has drawn sold-out crowds in a handful of global cities, and has played host to a who`s who of hip hop and DJ culture, with appearances by DJ Premier, Maseo, Brother Ali, A-Trak, Pete Rock, Lord Finesse and many, many more. With touring temporarily on hold, Bastid recently added Twitch streaming to his repertoire. Thanks to his high-energy sets, charismatic personality and unbound musical knowledge, he has quickly become one of the most watched and followed DJs on the platform. Even after two decades in the game, Skratch Bastid is showing no signs of slowing, and only continues to evolve and further cement his legend status.

GETTOBLASTER (Dirtybird / Defected / Basement Leak / Rawthentic / Desert Hearts / Glitterbox)

More than just DJ’s, this set of tastemakers are leading a movement, raised by Chicago and Detroit’s underground scenes and determined to keep it alive. Gettoblaster has created their own sound by taking what they’ve been influenced by for years and twisting it with a modern-day edge and pushing the genre of warehouse tracks to the future.

These powerhouses stay well-rinsed and consistently charting with their distinct blend of addictive hooks, crisp percussion, and room-shaking basslines. Gettoblaster’s music has been in regular
rotation for Claude VonStroke, Claptone, Diplo, Shiba San, Dom Dolla, Danny Howard, Patrick Topping and many more. Even Mixmag champions their "tough, warehouse sound" with a full-page article introducing them to the world in the UK print edition of the Magazine.

2019 was a great year. They started off with an instant classic on Claude Vonstroke’s Dirtybird Records, “Gat Dat” featuring Chicago legend DJ Funk. Followed a month later by the massive single “Dat Booty” on French producer Tchami’s Confession label, receiving top 5 status in Beatport sales chart & also receiving an award breaking top 50 biggest bass house tracks of the year. They kept it going with the Gettoblaster & Friends EP on Shiba San’s Basement Leak Label. The breakthrough single was Gettoblaster & Chris Larsen’s (CA) collaboration “Bounce Yo Body”. With it gaining popularity throughout the year, Defected Records took notice and licensed it for the “Defected Most Rated 2020” compilation.

In 2020, Gettoblaster’s first release was a collaboration with Chicago house legend DJ Deeon “The 302” on Patrick Topping’s new label Trick (also includes Remixes from Patrick Topping, Paul Johnson & DJ Haus). After the track was mentioned in MixMag, it was featured on multiple BBC Radio 1 shows which includes Annie Mac, Danny Howard, Pete Tong & Annie Nightingale. Danny Howard also named it his track of the week on his Nothing Else Matters Radio episode 218. Followed by a single on Dirtybird Records for their 2020 Miami Compilation “Excited” ft. Fuzzy Cufflinxx. They were also given the honors to do the DJ mix that came with the Compilation. Shortly after the Dirtybird release, the world was shut down by Covid-19. This didn’t slow them down by any means, the duo has been on a releasing rampage with new releases on Basement Leak, DFTD (Defected Records), Moody Recordings, Rawthentic, Safe Music, Strangle Love Recordings, Desert Hearts Records and Defected’s Glitterbox Recordings. Ending the year with their hit single “Alright Alright” on Spacedisco Records & Being Named #13 Traxsource’s Best Of 2020 Tech House Artist.

2021 was a massive year for Gettoblaster, playing 80 shows in 8 months and clocking one of the largest house records of the year, along with many other songs hitting top tier sales and streams. Gettoblaster kept up with their busy release schedule releasing music on Harvard Bass’s Bump City Records & then topped the Beatport House Top 100 with “H O U S E” ft. Missy on Superfett Records, reaching number 1 for seven weeks as well as over 15 weeks in the Top 10 and over 350 days in the House Top 100 & currently with over 1.5 million streams and it is the 6th largest House Music record on Beatport over the last 12 months. Then releasing music on Junior Sanchez’s Brobot Records, Yousef’s Circus Recordings, Demuir’s Purveyor Underground label, Shadow Child’s Takeout label, Javi Bora’s Too Many Rules, Shiba San’s Basement Leak, Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records, Dj Haus’s Hot Haus Recs, Glasgow Underground, Chris Lake’s Blackbook Records. Beatport named Gettoblaster’s single “H O U S E” ft. Missy the #2 most selling House Music & #17 all genres track of 2021. To top things off Traxsource.com named them the #10 Tech House Artist of the 2021 with 5 of the websites biggest selling tracks. Last year and currently they’re still holding a residency at DiscoPussy (Las Vegas) and have performed at Dirtybird CampINN (Orlando), Spring Awakening Festival (Chicago), Brooklyn Mirage (New York), Dirtybird BBQ (LA), Paxahau’s Micro Movement (Detroit).

2022 packed a punch, Claptone reached out & asked them to remix his track with Mayer Hawthorne “Feel This Way” & Chris Lake put out their track “Booty Shake” ft. DJ Funk on his label Black Book Records. They have already secured dates for North Coast Music Festival (Chicago),
Sunset Music Festival (Tampa), Imagine Festival (Georgia) along with 20 plus dates for their upcoming tour. Gettoblaster is an act not to miss.

Tickets · $20 - $600cityatnightApr1523.eventbrite.ca

Saturday April 15th we're proud to host for their White Rabbit debut, one of Canada's best dance music ambassadors, and an exceptional DJ & Producer:

SYDNEY BLU ( Desert Hearts | Katermukke)

Sydney Blu’s career can be considered a journey of evolvement. With a tremendous passion for live performance, music production, and all-around artistic creativity, Sydney’s constant determination shines brightly through her accomplished DJ career. With beginnings in Toronto Canada playing for The Guvernment Nightclub, Footwork Nightclub, and the LGBTQ+ community, then following 6 years in the United States touring the continent and the globe, all the way to her present life in Berlin Germany, Sydney’s dedication to living her life through music is unbridled. A proudly Canadian artist, Sydney’s success is largely attributed to her relentless touring schedule which she’s upheld for several years. In 2009, Sydney Blu founded her imprint, Blu Music, on the principle of authentic, dancefloor-rich house and techno, the following year she extended her brand to another branch introducing her legendary Blu Party series which curates some of the greatest names of the underground house.

On top of that, Sydney has released music on some of the most recognized labels in the industry including Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound, Steve Lawler’s VIVa Music, Desert Hearts Records, Deadmau5’s Mau5trap, Josh Butler’s Origins, Kevin Saunderson’s KMS Records, Roger Sanchez’s Undr the Rdr, Katerblau Berlin’s Katermukke Records, Carlo Lio & Nathan Barato’s Rawthentic Music and more. Her release "Give It Up For Me" on Mau5trap Recordings was one of Beatport’s highest selling songs, earning Sydney the rank of first female electronic music producer to have a top 10 hit on the platform. 2018 marked another milestone for the top-selling electronic artist, as she hit Top 10 on the Beatport Progressive House Chart for her single “Escape” on Underground Audio UK and earlier in the year she hit Top 20 on the Beatport Tech House chart with her single “Mind Games” on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound. The song also was the top-selling track on the labels Amsterdam Dance Event sampler and was premiered by Billboard Magazine.

March 2021 was the release of Sydney’s sophomore album Conviction, a meticulously produced dance floor-driven collection of electronic music, with synth-laden 80’s inspired lead single Monologue featuring Azari & III singer Fritz Helder transitioning into various shades of deep, tech, and melodic house.

Perhaps, her most fully realized body of work to date, Conviction climbed to the top of Beatport Top 10 in Afrohouse, Deep house, Minimal House, Melodic, and Tech house. Her lead singles Conspiracy, Temple, and To the Ground and were playlisted on Electronic Rising, Organica, and Housework. The LP also received media praise from outlets Mixmag, 6am Group, Data Transmission, Electronic Groove, Musicis4lovers, Beyond Fashion Magazine, HOLR Fashion Mag, and garnered radio play from Danny Howard of BBC Radio 1, Sirius XM Radio, and CBC Radio 1’s George Stromboulopoulos.
