Abstain from alcohol. Go for walks in the forest. Take up target shooting. Collect curios from thrift stores. Paint a room.

I suspect the best preventative against S.A.D. is going outside during the daytime, cold or not. Strong light on the optic nerves. Especially on bright days.

Incidentally, we're already a month after solstice; in barely 2-1/2 weeks, some of my houseplants that have been, um, vegetating will go "huh, there's more light!", and start growing again. And those that still grew will go nuts. Experience of years past. Somewhere between Feb-4 and Feb 8, depending...
