TWP PRESENTS: THE THIRD PROGRAM IN A SERIES ENTITLED “CELEBRATING PROFESSOR MERVYN MORRIS ON HIS APPOINTMENT AS POET LAUREATE OF JAMAICA” IN THE FIRST TWO PROGRAMS YOU HEARD A RECORDING OF THE POETRY SOCIETY OF JAMAICA’S TRIBUTE PAID BY THEM ON APRIL 29, 2014 WHEN THEY DEVOTED THEIR APRIL FELLOWSHIP TO HONOURING HIM AND LISTENING TO HIS READING OF A SELECTION OF HIS POEMS. IN THIS PROGRAM YOU WILL HEAR THREE TRIBUTES PAID PROFESSOR MORRIS HERE IN OTTAWA. THE FIRST WILL BE DR. JOY MIGHTY, THE GUYANESE-BORN, ASSOSCIATE VICE--PRESIDENT OF CARLETON UNIVERSITY, RESPONSIBLE FOR DISTANCE LEARNING, WHO HAD BEEN A STUDENT OF HIS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES. THE SECOND READ BY YOUR HOST LLOYD STANFORD, IS BY RENOWNED, GUYANESE-BORN, PRIZE-WINNING CANADIAN WRITER CYRIL DABYDEEN, A FORMER POET LAUREATE OF OTTAWA,CANADA WHO,AMONG OTHER INTERACTIONS, SERVED WITH PROFESSOR MORRIS AS A FELLOW ADJUDICATOR FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA’S NEUTSTADT INTERNATIONAL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE IN THE YEAR 2000. THE THIRD IS BASED MOSTLY ON A PAGE OF THE POETRY ARCHIVE‘S LISTING ON PROFESSOR MORRIS ON THE INTERNET AND, TO A LESSER EXTENT, OBSERVATIONS BY FRAGANO LEDGISTER , WHICH WILL BE READ BY PRIZE-WINNING JOURNALIST, WRITER, RETIRED PUBLIC SERVANT AND DECORATED COMMUNITY ACTIVIST EWART WALTERS, WHO HAS ADDED SOME PERSPECTIVES OF HIS OWN TO BOTH. LISTENERS WILL HAVE THE ADDED PLEASURE OF HEARING THE WONDERFUL READING OF TWO OF PROFESSOR MORRIS’S POEMS BY PROFESSOR MIGHTY WHO PLACES THEM, DEFTLY, IN PERTINENT SOCIO-POLITICAL 2014 CONTEXT.
