The Guest List
Thursday June 19th, 2025 with Joe Reilly
Interviews with Violist Emily Kistemaker, Richard Underhill of Shuffle Demons and Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene

We open the show in conversation with violist, Emily Kistemaker. She is participating in the National Arts Centre Orchestra's Mentorship Program for the second year, and recently returned from touring in South Korea and Japan with the NACO. She tells us how amazing it was to be on this international tour with the Orchestra and what she learned from the experience. We also talk about how her Mom inspired her to pursue music and about the pieces she will be performing with the Orchestra tonight (Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and John Luther Adams's Become Desert) and next week (Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra and Debussy's Mer.) We talk about the evolution of the lyrics in Shuffle Demons's songs and how they feature more socio-political commentary these days, as seen on the new album Are You Really Real. Shuffle Demons are performing at the Ottawa Jazz Festival on Sunday night, June 22 at 6:30 on the Mainstage in Confederation Park. It will be a blast!
