An interview with David Moore about his minimalist musical project Bing & Ruth and the music of the brand new album, Species, which was released this summer.

On the show today we talk to David Moore, the minimalist composer and keyboard player with the American musical project Bing & Ruth. We talk to Moore about his brand new album "Species" which was released in July. The album stands in stark juxtaposition to the group's last album "No Home Of The Mind" which is an exploration of beautiful ambient music with the piano at the centre of the mix. On "Species," Moore is predominantly using an organ and as a result he is creating trance-inducing minimalist music. Comparing the two albums one might think of "No Home Of The Mind" in the realm of Brian Eno and Harold Budd working together on "The Plateaux of Mirror" while "Species" is more akin to the hypnotic work of Steve Reich and Phllip Glass. We talk about this change in direction and how Moore is driven to explore new ideas with each new recording. We also talk about the qualities of the piano and the organ, and how Bing & Ruth have created two albums that are quite distinct in tone because of these differences. I was surprised to learn that the music on "Species" was recorded live off the floor and that Moore was really thinking about the live performances of these pieces while making the record - and how that is unfortunately on hold due to the COVID pandemic.
