Interviews with Royal Wood, Peter Katz, Great Lake Swimmers and the Elwins

Great interviews on the show today and LIVE music being made in the studio. Thanks to Dylan Hunter and Janis Lockwood for helping out with the production end!! Royal Wood dropped in today to play in the studio and chat with us and with Peter Katz. Royal was in town to talk about his big show at the National Arts Centre on May 6 when he will be performing with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Southam Hall. (I thought he was here to rehearse with the orchestra, but as Royal explained during the interview, he only gets to rehearse with the NACO on the day of the concert when they run through the performance twice from start to finish... once as a soundcheck/rehearsal and once for the audience... what an exhausting day that will be!!) We talk to Royal about making the charts for a big orchestral show and about his special Spotlight series whereby he got to select 5 artists to play at the NAC's Fourth Stage. Royal graced us with a brand new song "Long Way Out" which will be released on a new album Ghost Light in April. http://www.royalwood.ca http://nac-cna.ca/en/event/11343 Royal also joined in the conversation with Peter Katz. Royal selected Peter to play in the Spotlight series at the NAC on January 29th. As well, Royal co-produced Peter's new excellent album We Are The Reckoning, he sings with Peter on the track "Brother", the two have toured together... so they are pretty tight. We talk to Peter about his new album and some of the themes he's exploring in song. http://www.peterkatz.com http://nac-cna.ca/en/event/12246 THe Great Lake Swimmers are in at the Bronson Cente tonight (December 3.) The group released a new album earlier this year called A Forest of Arms. We talk to lead singer Tony Dekker about the environmental themes on the album and how the group has been so busy touring that it is only making it to Ottawa now as part of the relentless touring in support of the album. We also talk about how much the group's sound has evolved over the years and depth of the band's arrangements on the current album. http://www.greatlakeswimmers.com Finally we wrap up the show with the fun sounds of the Elwins. We talk to lead singer Matthew Sweeney about the various influences on the band's sound and the truly wonderful videos they have created for songs on the new album. You should definitely check out both So Down Low and Show Me How to Move online. The phone line wasn't the greatest but the music is a lot of fun and you may want to check these guys out at the House of Targ on Saturday night (December 5.) http://www.theelwins.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gup63tvG-KA Check out some live music this week.
