The Guest List
Thursday February 12th, 2015 with Joe Reillly
Interviews with Scott Hellman, Jay Malinowski, Better LIving Through Chemistry, and Esmerine

WOW... what a great show. Four interesting guests and lots of great music. Scott Helman and Jay Malinowski will both be performing as part of the Winter Jazz Festival presented by the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival. They are performing at Dominion Chalmers United Church on Friday night (Feb. 14th.) Helman is new force on the pop-rock music scene with a bright uplifting e.p. called Augusta just out of the musical starting gate. Malinowski is the frontman for Bedouin Soundclash, and he is out touring in support of a solo album called Martel. This is an intriguing album with rich textured songs that cover a wide musical spectrum. He will be performing on keyboards with a string trio so this will be an intriguing show not to be missed. For info on the Winter Jazz Festival go to: http://ottawajazzfestival.com/lineup/ Better Living Through Chemistry creates thoughtful power-pop-rock songs that will appeal to fans of bands like the Ataris ... I think! We talk to Luigi Saracino about the power of words and stories in song and the difficulties finding the right name for a band... he would know as he ran into plenty of name challenges in previous groups! The band is playing at Zaphod Beeblebrox on Friday night (Feb. 13th.) Should be a lot of fun! Finally we talk to Bruce Cawdron of Esmerine (and formerly of Godspeed! You Black Emperor) about that band's amazing music. Last year Esmerine put on the best show of 2014 at the Black Sheep Inn bringing to life their chamber rock/world music influenced by equal parts Steve Reich/Philip Glass and the rooted folk music of Turkey. The group's album Dalmak won the 2014 Juno Award for "best instrumental album." Bruce talks about the transportative nature of live music and what to expect on Friday at the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival series at Dominion Chalmers United Church. Don't miss this concert! Get out and see some live music this week!
