The Toronto Symphony Orchestra will be in Ottawa this Monday with a very rare performance of Shostakovich's 12th symphony. For many, a problematic work because of its overt political and progagandic themes. Shostakovich had a very complicated, difficult, and dangerous relationship with the USSR. Was this piece intended to protect himself and his family and act as a cover for his more insidious and critical contemporary pieces such as his 8th string quartet and 13th symphony? It's hard to know the truth. In 2012, 20 years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, what are we to think when listening to this piece from 50 years ago? It remains a thoroughly enjoyable piece of music and you have the extremely rare opportunity to hear it live, along with Beethoven in Ottawa Monday. For more information:
