Elliott Carter

Today's show we look at some music from American composer Elliott Carter, who died this past Monday at the age of 103. He was active and perhaps even at his most productive near the end of his life, with at least 53 pieces composed since he turned 90. We hear a new recording of his Cello Concerto from 2001 which features a beautiful, dramatic and lyrical cello contrasted with a percussive, theatrical orchestra. We also hear a piano sonata from 1946, 2 works separated by 55 years, but neither from the start or end of his extremely long composing career!
