Eduard Napravnik/Evgeny Soifertis, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Titov - The Romantic Piano Concerto vol. 37 - Hyperion
Eduard Napravnik was principal conductor of the Mariinsky (Kirov) Theatre in St. Petersburg for over 40 years starting in 1869. He was very important in supporting and giving premieres of operas and music by all the well known Russian composers. So I was inspired to program his unknown, yet thoroughly enjoyable piano concerto after hearing live the current Mariinksy Theatre Orchestra with celebrated conductor Valery Gergiev in a visit to Ottawa this week. They performed Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff's 3rd piano concerto. A work which is justly famous. But there are so many other unkown works out there that are worth hearing, as this concerto proves.
