CKCU FUNDING DRIVE WEEK TWO!!

I am deep into a book by Harvard professor of genetics David Reich, who specializes in population studies of ancient humans. The 2018 book entitled "Who We Are and How We Got here" is a fascinating look at the science of ancient DNA. He has played an essential part in this research. One of the crucial findings of this hard science is that population mixture and migration ARE the essential natural state of all of humanity's history. There was never a "pure" state Homo Sapiens, as pre-human ancestor species were themselves driven by population mixture and migration. He states many times that the "DNA revolution has shown that today's classifications do not reflect fundamental "pure" units of biology. Instead, today's divisions are recent phenomena, with their origin in repeating mixtures and migrations. The findings of the ancient DNA revolution suggest that the mixtures will continue. Mixture is fundamental to who we are, and we need to embrace it, not deny that it occurred." Further that "ancient DNA has established major migration and mixture between highly divergent populations as a key force shaping human prehistory, and ideologies that seek to a return to a mythical purity are flying in the face of hard science." I am not just bringing this up as an fascinating digression, I believe it is foundational to what I try to accomplish with my program and what it stands for. The world has taken a very dark turn over the past few years towards increased racism, intolerance of difference, antagonism towards migrants, and a retrograde belief in ethnic and nationalist purity--even in Canada. The hard science of human genetics proves that is all fantasy, the only thing pure is the bullshit all these regressive movements spew. All humans alive today are mixtures descended from populations who were themselves mixtures. Humans are "Heinz 57s" all the way down. Music reflects all this! The far-flung musical mixes I present most weeks reflect the true nature of humanity. Please donate to stand with me against this rising tide of intolerance, and enjoy the world's greatest music to boot!

None other than Omara Portuondo. I saw her in 2019 at the Jazz Festival. She was 88 years old, was helped out to a chair on the stage by her pianist Robert Fonseca. She sat down, then sang, and wow, could not believe she was 88 years old!
