30 for 30. The final album, with clarinetist Yom. Syrian Sufi music and clarinet with Kinan Azmeh.

Continuing the celebration of my 30 years on-air at CKCU with the final album from my list of 30 of the most significant albums in my musical evolution. The final entry is the 2014 album "Le Silence de l'Exode" from French clarinetist and self-described "musical nomad" Yom. His 6th album features an acoustic quartet with Yom on clarinet, Claude Tchaimitchian on doublebass, Farid D on cello, and Bijan Chemirani on Persian percussion. This composition, a fourteen part suite, was commissioned for a festival in 2014 in Paris with the theme of diaspora. Yom composed the work as a mystical introspection on the seminal Biblical event in Judaism. I enjoy the clarinet. Mozart's clarinet quintet and concerto are at the pinnacle of his art. The clarinet is a great orchestral instrument and I enjoy it in Klezmer music, including Yom's earlier albums. But I did not expect this album. The suite begins quietly, with the bass and cello, and is joined by the clarinet intoning a slow, mournful melody which rises to a blistering, wailing intensity. The deep rumble of the daf joins and this unlikely quartet of instruments reaches deep in you, grabs your heart, grabs your gut and takes you on an hourlong ecstatic musical saga, leaving you transported. All this from just a clarinet. I did not expect this. Here is the complete list: The 30 for 30 albums heard so far: 1. Lustmord "The Monstrous Soul" Side Effects 2. 2024 has not been a good year, but hope springs eternal. Recent shocking events in Syria have raised the hopes of most Syrians in and outside of Syria. The overthrow of Bashir al-Assad's despicable, murderous regime can only be a good thing. Syria's future is fraught with danger, but this sea-change offers the only opportunity for positive change for Syria. I sincerely hope that the extremely wealthy countries of Europe, as well as Syria's neighbours and the US, all of whom are highly motivated for the thousands of Syrian refugees to return to Syria, recall their history. Syria will need enormous help to become a peaceful, safe, and prosperous place. Support in rebuilding Syria would not just help Syrians, but the world.

We hear a clarinet concerto by Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom. The 2017 "Adrift on the Wine-Dark Sea" takes its inspiration from two tales thousands of years apart, Homer's "Odyssey" and "A Hope More Powerful than the Sea" recounting the story of 19 year old Syrian refugee Doaa Al Zamel who was one of only 11 survivors of the tragic 2014 Malta migrant shipwreck which killed 500 migrants. She survived at sea for four days holding on to two infants who also survived.

We also hear an incredible location recording from 1973 of a Sufi ritual in Aleppo at the Zawiya of Shaykh Ahmad al-Yamili. Most of the Zikr features the gorgeous, improvised singing of the munshid Muhhiedin Ahmed. This echoes the intensity and spirituality of "Le Silence de l'Exode" of the first hour.

LOVE Yom / Le Silence de l'Exode ! A sometimes play here, when in a mood for "calming exhilaration", if that makes any sense. Although i must say, i do get exhausted by just the thought of soooo much breath control! ;^)

And, i missed a couple of the "Top 30 Greatest Hits of All Time" episodes. Including the Schnittke even. Can't do 'live' much today either. Interruptions do not do justice for real listens. ... queue OnDemand ...
