Games of the Night Wind: guest, Christina Petrowska Quilico, joins me to discuss her new album she is featuring at Music & Beyond.

Today I am joined by a Canadian musical treasure, pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico. Petrowska Quilico has recently released an album "Games of the Night Wind" featuring twelve new compositions by Canadian composer David Jaeger. These twelve piano pieces are nocturnes, which are interspersed with nocturnes and nocturnal pieces by Toru Takemitsu, Alexandre Tansman, and Heynryk Gorecki. We will discuss this unique, haunting program, which she is presenting at Music & Beyond on Wednesday July 10th. https://musicandbeyond.ca/tc-events/nocturnes/ We will listen to "Games of the Night Wind" and also some other music appearing at the festival.

Our southern neighbours are celebrating today, and there is so much music I would love to feature which described and defines that whole horrible, wonderful mess down there. But I have very limited time, so I will feature an amazing, riotous piece which encapsulates a lot of it. American composer William Bolcom's Piano Concerto was commissioned for the 1976 Bicentennial year in the United States. He wrote that it was one of the bitterest pieces he had yet written. Like John Cage, he wondered what could be celebrated with a straight face. But in spite of the irony and bitterness, there is also a lot of beauty and grandeur and even fun! A wonderful, multi-faceted piece.
