30 for 30 with Greek and Portuguese songstresses; new music from South Africa, Pakistan, Canada and more!
We will continue celebrating my 30 years on-air at CKCU with 30 of the most significant albums in my musical evolution. This week, we build on the two Balkan albums heard last week with another album featuring the music of Goran Bregovic. The 1991 album "Paradehtika" features his songs sung by Greek singer Alkistis Protopsalti with a diverse group of Balkan musicians including Bulgarian clarinetist Ivo Papasov. It was the same Serbian friend who introduced me to last week's albums who shared with me this one. He only had a copy dubbed onto cassette, and I also made a copy. I listened to this cassette on repeat for months! I still think it is Bregovic's music at its very best. Such anguish and passion and joy, this is music to live life at full throttle!
The other album was one I first heard on CKCU in 1998. I was listening to Tony Daye's Sunday afternoon program (the original This Island Earth), and this song came on. After I picked up my jaw from the floor and put it back in its place, I called Tony and asked him what was that stunning thing I just heard. It was the incredible Fado singer Misia with the title track from her first international release "Garras Dos Sentidos" ("Claws of the Senses"). I immediately biked to CD Warehouse and bought a copy! Misia was the first Fado singer to break with traditional instrumentation, shocking audiences when she started in Portugal. But her incredible voice, dripping with saudade, and her sensual, rich music won over most listeners; and took my breath away. We will start today's show with that jaw-dropping song I first heard on CKCU in 1998.

Since saudade is certainly the most prominent emotion in Misia's songs I snuck in the Angolese singer Bonga's great rendition of this famous songs from 1974. Saudade is also dripping from Protopsalti's wonderful version of Ederlezi which follows. |

Misia is also noted for bringing many influences outside fado into her music, like tango in this killer song. For this album, Misia chose all Portuguese poems to set to music, including commissioning a couple new poems. This poem "From Life I Want Signs" by Mario Claudio reads in English:
O God of the minor fado, O god who rules inside me, Fill sorrow's cup With a ripe wine To kill my thirst for the end. From life I want the signs Of a seagull in the sand, The scent of an orange, And the death that best preserves A love that has no home. In the blank mirror that enchants me, May a swirl of snow remain, And may a star ascend Whenever this fado is sung, When the earth, to me, will feel light. |

Another fond memory about "Paradehtika" and the summer of '96. A close friend of mine had a few of his friends, mostly international students from his McGill days, visiting and we were driving to Quebec for a camping trip. I was driving with Victor, who was Lebanese and lived in Cyprus. I had "Paradehtika" on in the car stereo, and he was thrilled to hear great music, because all he had heard on the trip so far was "terrible American pop music".
