Subduing The Silence, a new experimental Chinese-Canadian jazz album by vocalist and composer Ruiqi Wang; Igor Levit's latest piano album and more
Singer and composer Ruiqi Wang moved to Montreal from Hangzhou, China in 2017 to attend McGill's Jazz Performance program. She has immersed herself in the Montreal jazz scene and has been largely influenced by experimental jazz, European classical, traditional Chinese music, as well as the philosophy and music of Pauline Oliveros. She is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Contemporary Jazz Composition in Switzerland. She released a fascinating new album in October called "Subduing the Silence" with music for voice, piano, bass, drums and a string quartet. This album features three different takes on an ancient Chinese song "Xiang Lang Jin Ni". We will hear the entire album interspersed with traditional Chinese music and other music.

The second half of today's program matches the wildly unique experimental nature of the first half, but in much older music. One of my favourite pianists, Igor Levit, has steadily recorded absolutely superbly crafted programs, all almost tailor-made for me! The latest is no exception, another two hour program with some magnificent pieces. The overall theme is Fantasy, in the Romantic musical sense, as described in the notes "it has been used to describe the most varied forms of instrumental music. The only thing that they have in common is that they do not have a fixed form". We will hear the first half today, which features Bach's "Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in d minor" and Liszt's "Sonata in b minor". I heard Igor Levit perform Liszt's sonata live in Leipzig last May, an unforgettable performance! We finally have Igor Levit's Liszt sonata on record. He uses a new critical edition of the sonata recently published, which has some very subtle changes from the standard edition used by most pianists. The main thing is the transition from b minor to b major towards the end is a bit more gradual, whereas it is more abrupt in the standard edition. The standard edition uses the first published edition from 1854 as authorative, and does not use corrections Liszt made himself afterwards, nor the objections from several of Liszt's most renowned students such as Karl Klindworth, Alexander Siloti, Arthur Friedheim, and Jose Vianna da Motta. |
