Roma brass; Gnawa music; Constantinople at the Chamberfest

Starting today with some fun music from Fanfare Ciocarlia before moving into the incredible energy of Gnawa music, recorded live at a Sufi ceremony in Essaouira. Constantinople is finally returning to Ottawa! The last time I saw them was in February 2020, just before Covid shut down the world and music for several years. They were scheduled for another concert in spring of 2020, which was cancelled. After touring all over the world this past year, they are back! They are appearing next Thursday for a lunchtime concert. https://www.chamberfest.com/event/2023/constantinople-da-vincis-bridge/

A one hour look at one of Canada's greatest musical treasures, Constantinople. Since 1988, founder Kiya Tabassian has led Constantinople to become one of the most omnivorous musical groups I know. Trained in the Persian radif and an accomplished setar virtuoso, he started the group as a mix of Persian and early European music but its musical reach has become enormous. Constantinople has played with musicians from every continent, from Mongolian throat singers to Canadian First Nations singers, African musicians, musicians from all over Europe from both classical and folk traditions. They have a large discography, but even that does not cover all the varied performances and projects they have worked on in concert. They finally return to Ottawa to perform with Renaissance singer Marco Beasley in a noon hour performance at the Chamberfest.
