New compilation with the unique Ethiopian pianist Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru. Another side of Strut Record's first release. Obscure pianist Ervin Nyiregyházi and Liszt.
Today we will start with a new compilation of the unique Ethiopian pianist Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, who passed away earlier this year aged 99. This compilation adds more depth to her legendary release in the Éthiopiques series, which launched her to global acclaim. Most of the compositions we will hear today were inspired or dedicated to extended members of her family.
We will also hear another side from the Strut double-lp "Club Africa". This was the first release from this UK label coming out in 1999, and which I just recently encountered. Full of terrific Afrofunk, Afrobeat, and Afrojazz from African and South American musicians.

Ervin Nyiregyhazi was a very obscure Hungarian pianist who lived from 1903 to 1987. He fell into almost total obscurity by the 1930's, yet those who had heard him, recount pianism and a powerful tone, which not even his famous contemporaries like Hoffman or Horowitz could match. He survived periods of homelessness and eked out a very frugal living for decades in the United States, without owning a piano. He was married many times and he eventually turned back to a few live performances in the early 70's to help cover medical bills of his current wife. At one of these very rare performances, in San Francisco, 1973, Terry McNeill of the International Piano Archive (I.P.A.) was in attendance and made a very poor quality cassette recording of two Liszt pieces. He played the cassette for George Benko, one of the cofounders of the I.P.A., and they were astounded, never having heard playing like this before. George Benko played the cassette for many acclaimed pianists such as Alicia de Larrocha, Jorge Bolet, Garrick Ohlsson as well as the famous New York piano critic Harold Schonberg, who were all dumfounded. An all-Liszt studio recording was made in 1974 which was released in 1977 which included the live recordings. Though the recording quality is poor, we will hear these two pieces, Liszt Deux Legendes, No. 1: "St. François d'Assise: La prédication aux oiseaux" and No. 2: "St. François de Paule marchant sur les flots". These performances are unbelievable. I wish he had recorded so much more, but he was uninterested in the life of a concert pianist by then, he refused an offer to play at Carnegie Hall in 1978. He performed for the last time in Japan in 1980 and 1982. |

Continuing from the Spiritual Liszt in these ecstatic performances to the spiritual, private music of Ostad Elahi, who after pursuing a traditional reclusive mystical Sufi life in his youth, renounced his renunciation and joined society as a civil servant in the Judiciary. However, this was not a renunciation of his spiritual preoccupations, but an evolution of them. He remained a master of the tanbur and only ever performed for himself and likeminded spiritual friends in domestic settings. A few of these sessions were recorded like the one we hear today, when he was in his 70's, around the same time Ervin Nyireghyhazi was peforming the Liszt halfway across the world. |
