The trio with vocalist Arooj Aftab, pianist Vijay Iyer, and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily performed last night at the Ottawa Jazz Festival, sadly I was not able to attend, but I have been listening to their new album a lot this past week. It is really superb, minimalist and subtle improvisation. It is mostly instrumental with snippets of Urdu poetry sung which are more impactful with their sparse appearances.

Aaaah... ill tell you the story anyways. Saw him with à friend in Montréal at St James United Church, late 80's- early 90's (réal world period). It was intense! A bunch of young pakistani men arrived late, and went up to the balcony. At one point, they just went completely wild, walked down to the front of the stage, and they were throwing things at him... my friend and I wondered what it was? At the end of the concert, we went to see: it was money (bills)!?! Apparently, this was the thing to do, i learned. Im so happy i got to see this concert, in such an intimate setting. Thank you David for your fine show. I listen every week.

That would have been Sharabi with Arooj Aftab et al. On that particular track, it is just Shahzad Ismaily on moog synthesizer with Arooj Aftab's vocals.

JUST HOLY WOW! On the minimalist Arabic--ish sonics just now (15:05-ish). My brain may explode ... and the phone may ring. Then headphones clamped back ... and more happy homework. And or Cardinal neighbor addend to the happy sonic joy as well.
