A dream come true, Kayhan Kalhor and Toumani Diabaté! 24 years of Strut records, the Jazz Festival and the Sun Ra Arkestra.

The annual Morgenland Festival in Osnabrück, Germany, has been a source of truly incredible meetings of musicians from around the world, as well quite a few top recordings, and this new recording is no exception. When I heard this album was coming out, I thought, momentarily, are my dreams coming true? This recording features two supreme masters of their traditions, Kayhan Kalhor and Toumani Diabaté. Both have been essential figures in my musical universe, following their careers and their music for almost three decades, yet they had never met until they both played at the Morgenland Festival in 2016. They had an impromptu musical session at the festival, followed by a very short tour. After the tour, they recorded this album together. There are nine improvised tracks, but I believe it is really one continuous hour-long suite that starts in the equivalent of dastgah Nava, moves to dastgah Mahur, before returning to Nava. The titles are taken from one of Kayhan Kalhor's favoutie poems "Ballad of the Wayfarer" by Mehdi Akhavan-Sales. As you would expect, the music is exquisite, subtle artistry mixing with passionate virtuosity, complete magic.

The Ottawa Jazz Festival begins tomorrow. There are some real highlights, including the Sun Ra Arkestra, Snarky Puppy, Vijay Iyer, Colin Stetson among others. The Sun Ra Arkestra is still lead by Marshall Allen, who joined the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1960 and has led it since Sun Ra's death in 1993. Allen recently turned 99 years old and still leads the Arkestra when they play within short driving range from his home. Sadly, Ottawa is too far, but the band will be here Monday night making cosmic waves! The Sun Ra Arkestra has released two albums recently by Strut Records, who have also reissued many Sun Ra albums and six albums by Ottawa's Souljazz Orchestra. Strut Records formed in the UK in 1999 and I recently found their first ever title released in 1999, a compilation of Afrofunk, Afrobeat, and Afrojazz. I did not know it back then, and it's a terrific double lp. We'll hear the first side to start this set, and I am sure I'll be throwing on the other three sides over the summer.

Sun Ra Arkestra on Monday!

I knew the following tack sounded familiar! It is a Fela Kuti song covered by this Columbian band also found on the 2012 Analog Africa compilation "Diablos Del RItmo". I just played it on my show recently this past February:
