Kyiv Eternal: Reflections on this past year of suffering, resilience, and courage in Ukraine with composer Oleh Shpudeiko and his love letter for Kyiv, using electronics and sounds of city life recorded in Kyiv. Also DakhaBrakha and Lubomyr Melnyk.

Friday February 24th marked one year since Putin's invasion of Ukraine. The Ukrainian people have shown unbelievable resilience and courage, and continue to suffer enormously. Ukrainian composer Oleh Shpudeiko, who records under the name Heinali, was shocked and horrified by the invasion, and this album has been his response. Oleh says “After the Battle of Kyiv was over, many Kyivites noticed this strange feeling...It was as if the city was alive, breathing. We wanted to hug it, to protect every inch of it from harm. I didn’t know how to do it back then. It took time and distance to figure it out, but ‘Kyiv Eternal’ is my hug.” Shpudeiko got a handheld digital recorder in 2012 and spent a year recording sounds around Kyiv. He had hundreds of sound files of Kyiv on a hard drive when he fled Kyiv last February. He is now a refugee in Germany. "Kyiv Eternal" was composed with electronics as well as the sounds of city life he recorded. The electronics were influenced by drones of medieval music. Shpudeiko says “Medieval music is less about harmonic development and more about creating a certain atmosphere and a feeling. Drone and ambient music is the same. It is designed to invoke certain religious experiences, mystical experiences.” We will hear the whole album. As well, we will hear from the Kyiv-based quartet DakhaBrakha who fuse Ukrainian folk music with other traditions from around the world, the have called their music "ethnic chaos". They are amazing! And they are performing in Ottawa this Saturday! https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/31135 Finally, we will hear an extraordinary piece from Canadian-Ukrainian pianist-composer Lubomyr Melnyk. This is a legendary recording from 1984, which I have not played on my show for at least 15 years.

DakhaBrakha (Give/Take) was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art «DAKH» by the avant-garde theatre director — Vladyslav Troitskyi. Because of his influence, theatrics have always been a large part of their live performances, which we will have a rare chance to see this Saturday evening at the NAC! We will hear some pieces from their two most recent albums, from 2020 and 2016 and one older album from 2010. Of 2016 "The Road", DakhaBrakha writes "This album was created at the very difficult time for our Motherland. We want to dedicate it to those who gave their lives for our freedom, who continue stand over its guard, and who go the challenging way of a free person without losing their hope." This is even more true today.

A real treat, at least for me(!), Lubomyr Melnyk's legendary recording "Song of Galadriel" from 1984. The first music of his I heard, which is still inconceivable in its unique beauty. This is music I need right now. This is music we all need right now.

02:02:02 pm. Loving the atmosphere. And deeply grieving the context. Off to errands (Wallacks Art Supply). Later....

How fabulous to hear this instantly recognizable piece from the luminous genius Lubomyr Melnyk! Thank you. Been decades but still resonates. I knew this guy a little in the way way back -such a unique Canadian talent, too hidden. Great show all 'round thanks again.

Thanks Dave! Powerful pieces. Listened from S’toon. 1/2 power outage here interrupted my listening but, reminded me of the suffering in Ukraine. Slava Ukraini!
