Celebrating the "Atlas Lions" with the latest from the Master Musicians of Jajouka and other Moroccan music!

The 2022 Men's World Cup is ongoing, and I was thrilled to see Morocco win their game in the first knockout round and advance to the quarter-finals for the first time. A bit of my heart is always in Morocco, and it was the Master Musicians of Jajouka who began my Moroccan journey almost 30 years ago. Their album "Apocalypse Across the Sky", produced by Bill Laswell, was released in 1992 and I first encountered it around 1994 when I started at CKCU. At the first sounding of the double-reeded ghaitas, I was captivated, and this led me to devour all the Moroccan music I could. It also led me to travelling to Morocco on two richly musical trips. So I can think of no better way to celebrate this wonderful Moroccan World Cup journey than with the brand new release from the Master Musicians of Jajouka. The new album was recorded in their village in 2019, after the band's leader, Bachir Attar, hired Italian musician and producer Jacopo Andreini to record as much of the Master Musicians' catalogue as possible over the course of the week. Hours and hours were recorded, and (hopefully this first) album features almost two hours of it. We will listen to a significant slice of the new album! Their drums, ghaitas, flutes, gimbris, and voices are some of the most joyful and spiritual music I know!

Just joining in, unfortunately late. COOL sounds from Morocco emanating! And i see Laswell in list as well. While a very few of his efforts i don't dig as well as others, they are always very good, and the sound production is always just fantastic. Don't know any of these -- very happy homework.

Great vibes thanks David! Remarkable how prolific Laswell remains. Tagnawwit never even got a physical release. As much as I love my records, we gotta keep our ears on digital releases...

Thanks! Yeah I would have loved this on LP or CD, but can't neglect it. Also should check out Bill Laswell's collaboration with the Master Musicians of Jajouka, a live recording. A couple of the musicians in Laswell's group appear on both albums. This one also has Hamid Drake. https://modtechnologies.bandcamp.com/album/apocalypse-live
