I watched the Scottish film "Limbo" this past week (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9138170/), about a young Syrian musician, an oud player, who as a refugee finds his way to a remote Scottish island where he waits to see if he will be granted asylum. It is a film moving from dry humour to despair and with some great, hopeful music. So of course, today we will hear a Syrian oud master, Safwan Bahlawan, recorded live at the 2006 Oud festival in Oman. Keeping with a Syrian theme, but very different music, we will hear from Kinan Azmeh's most recent album "Flow". This album came out last year, but I only picked it up last month at his concert in Ottawa. Very happy I did because I think it's his best album to date! Recorded with the NDR Bigband, it showcases Kinan Azmeh's compositions with a big band of virtuoso jazz soloists. We will also hear the latest from Cuban treasure Eliades Ochoa and Zimbabwe's Black Umfolosi who will be appearing at the NAC this Sunday! https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/31131
