Guest Noam Lemish joins me to discuss his new album "Erlebnisse" and his far-flung musical career. Music from Sarathy Korwar, Mohamed Abozekry, Girija Devi.
Today I have a very special guest, pianist, composer, jazz professor Noam Lemish. He has a fascinating musical background. Born in the US, he grew up in Israel, moved to San Fanscisco as a young man to study music, taught music for some time in the hidden kingdom of Bhutan, and has taught and performed for the past decade in Toronto where he is an assistant professor of jazz instruction at York University.
We will hear a selection of improvisations from his recent solo piano album "Erlebnisse", German for deeply felt experiences. All 16 pieces on the album were improvised and recorded in single takes. A beautiful album and an original voice in jazz. We will be hearing some of his older compositions on future shows.

Continuing with an example of the extraordinarily rich cross cultural music coming out of Toronto from Jaffa Road's new album, and their version of a Jewish Moroccan song which was very popular in Israel as well as Morocco. |

I have been watching the BBC series "A Suitable Boy" based on Vikram Seth's novel of the same name. Vikram Seth always writes extremely well about music and it almost always plays an important role in his novels as it does in "A Suitable Boy". One of the main characters is a female singer, Saeeda Bai, played by the wonderful actress Tabu. Every episode I watch makes me want to listen to Indian music, so today we hear legendary singer Girija Devi in a live recording from 1989. The BBC series is very good, but I strongly encourage everyone to read the novel. There is a very involved musical subplot around Saeeda Bai and her musicians which is not part of the tv series (it is an enormous novel which could not all be included in a tv series). |
