Musical Legacies: Homayoun Shajarian and Femi Kuti; Congolese Soukous and Funk from Verckys and more.

Today we will hear music from two musical legacies: Femi Kuti, the eldest son of Fela Kuti, and Homayoun Shajarian, the eldest son of Reza Mohammad Shajarian. Both sons strive to continue the great musical legacies of their fathers, Femi with pointed social and political commentary through fantastic afrobeat music, both singing and playing saxophone and trumpet; Homayoun singing Persian classical music at its highest level. We hear Homayoun Shajarian in a live recording of a suite with six movements in Dashti, composed by Hamid Motebassem of the Dastan ensemble. He's singing divine and profane love poems from the three most important historical Persian poets, Sa'di, Hafez, and Rumi and contemporary poems from Mohammed Reza Shafiei Kadkani, as well as a contribution by Hamid Motebassem himself.
We start with a wonderful Analog Africa compilation of the Congolese musician Kiamuangana Mateta who went by his stage name of Verckys. He joined Franco's OK Jazz group in 1963 when he was 18 and quickly made a name for himself as a fantastic saxophone player who was particularly adept at improvising within the longer works. In 1968 he left to pursue his own music and formed his own group, l'Orchestre Vévé, with whom he recorded and toured until the late 70's. Verckys was also a shrewd businessman and he created his own music label, Vévé, which recorded many Congolese albums. We will hear a few selections from the Analog Africa compilation, along with some great tracks from Femi Kuti's new album "Stop the Hate", available on Bandcamp (part of a double album with a new album from Femi Kuti's son Made Kuti, who continues Fela Kuti's legacy into its 3rd generation):
