Every August, my heart turns towards Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, one of the brightest stars in my musical universe who burned out far too quickly. We will hear two very different versions of the same song by the great master. Also, showing that Nusrat still has the power to influence generations that came after him, two songs from a group of young musicians in their 20's, Rehmat-e-Nusrat, from Uttarakhand, India who perform Qawwali music with Nusrat as their guide.

The first of two versions we will hear of Nusrat's popular song by 20th century Urdu poet Khawajja Parvaiz, "Main Janna Jogi De Naal" which features very tasteful synthesizer and keyboards, one of countless examples of recordings made in Pakistan of which I have very few details. Most of his recordings made outside Pakistan featured strictly his traditional group of singers, harmonium, and tabla, but there are quite a number of Pakistani recordings which featured many other instruments. |
