The 8th of 12 exceptional concert recordings for 2019: Kayhan Kalhor in concert with Madjid Khaladj; Kamancello, Arvo Part
For 2019, I have chosen 12 exceptional concert recordings to program with one each month. I have set a couple of simple rules: the recordings will be played in their entirety and represent a single concert. These 12 recordings feature some of my favourite artists, and in many of the cases, also represent the very best from these artists.
Today we hear two supreme masters of Persian music, the incomparable Kayhan Kalhor with Madjid Khaladj in a 2010 concert recorded in Amsterdam. Despite both being from the same generation of musicians and innovative leaders on their instruments, the kamancheh and percussion, particularly the tombak, this was their first meeting and proved to be exquisite improvised music making, profound and staggeringly beautiful.

Unfortunately, despite Ottawa having been a second home for Kayhan Kalhor, he rarely makes an appearance here. However, this weekend we will have the opportunity to see kamancheh as part of another improvisational duo. Kamancello will be performing this Saturday evening at the Shenkman Arts Centre. Their concert last May was sold out, so don't miss your chance this time!
