Homayoun Shajarian with his recent album "Emshab Kenar-E Ghazalhaye Man Bekhab" with music by Fardin Khal'Atbari.

Homayoun Shajarian, son of the great Mohammed Reza Shajarian, has been singing in so many fascinating projects, stretching the Persian classical music tradition, from a Rumi Opera by Behzad Abdi to the tale of Simorq by Hamid Motebassem along with many traditional Persian classical recordings. Today we hear him sing in "Emshab Kenar-E Ghazalhaye Man Bekhab" with 16 songs by composed by Fardin Khal'Atbari with lyrics by Afshin Yadollahi. Unfortunately I do not know a lot about this album as all the notes are in Farsi. However I can tell you it is gorgeous and melancholy with his solo singing accompanied by a string quartet with occasional dotar, tombak and santur. Thank you to Mehdi Fallahi who provided me with more information, it is a string quartet with Pedram Faryousefi and Paneed Faryousefi on violin, Parisa Peerzadeh, viola, Aatenaw Eshtiaghi, cello, as well as Kave Salehi, dotar, Mahyar Tarihee, santur, Aeen Meshkatian, tombak (daughter of the late Parviz Meshkatian, brilliant santur master and founding member of the famed Aref ensemble and frequent collaborator with Reza Shajarian, so it's fitting his daughter is playing with Homayoun). It was a big seller when it was released in Iran, and a thank you to my friends Mehdi and Hengameh for bringing it back from Iran for me!

The next set is centered on the new debut album from young American violinist Elicia Silverstein. For her debut recording she has chosen a fascinating and bold program mixing works from 17th century Italian Baroque composers and 20th century Italian modernist composers. I bookend those pieces with two from the Uighar musician Abdulla Majnun and his unique custom made diltar which combines the plucked tambur and the bowed satar to form a single double-necked instrument.
