"Three Letters from Sarajevo", Goran Bregovic's new album with his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra. New albums from Seckou Keita & AKA Trio, Bassekou Kouyate & N'Goni Ba, Ustad Saami, Dino Saluzzi.

Early In 1991 Goran Bregovic was filmed on a rooftop in his hometown Sarajevo speaking of his tremendous admiration for the mix of cultures and religions in Sarajevo and expressed musically with overlapping Muslim call to prayer and Catholic and Orthodox bells. He says “It would be a shame, if it has to stop one day”. This was just a few months before the war which and the siege of Sarajevo--the longest siege in modern history--which would destroy this coexistence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5RPcFObWi0 Goran Bregovic returns to this time with his new album "Three Letters From Sarajevo". It is a centered around three pieces (the "Letters") for violin with three different violinists, Serbian Mirjana Neskovic, Tunisian Zied Zouari and Israeli Gershon Leizerson. The three "Letters" are surrounded by songs with several different guests singers, including some of the last recordings by the late Rachid Taha, Israeli singers Asaf Avidan and Riff Cohen, Spanish singer Bebe. They are joined by Goran Bregovic's "The Wedding and Funeral Orchestra" giving it a wonderful gypsy-brass with Arabic, Jewish, Spanish flavours and a punk punch. The album is almost cinematic, not surprising considering Goran Bregovic's previous soundtrack masterpieces like "Time of the Gypsies" and "Underground", and therefore really deserves a full listen. We will also hear from the upcoming album by the AKA Trio featuring the Italian guitarist Antonio Forcione, Senegalese Kora player Seckou Keita, and Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale who all met in their new home in the UK. It is a tremendously sweet mix. Seckou Keita will be in town this Friday forming another trio with Omar Sosa and Gustavo Ovalles.
