Music of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir part II: Music for a disquiet world.

Today is the second show looking at the music of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. She has quickly become one of my favourite working composers. Her music is both fierce and gorgeous. The new album dedicated to her work is the 2nd by the International Contemporary Ensemble and features a number of chamber works for varying ensembles, from solo piano to string trio and octect, wind instruments and larger ensemble. Entitled "Aequa" many of the pieces suggest an obsession with balance, but in truth a balance which is threatened: with her inspiration from Northern climes and nature, it could be the soundtrack for it, austere and beautiful but with deep anxiety running through it as it faces catastrophic change. We will hear a large set with a number of works from the album interspersed with other music which complement or sometimes contrast with her music.
