Music of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir part I
Today will feature the first of a two-part look at the incredible music of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. In the past few years her music has been gaining a lot of attention, with a growing list of commissions and performances. Her music is epic and primal, as through it was channeling Iceland's volcanic interior. She devotes a lot of attention to sound and texture, and how it evolves in minute detail from instrument to instrument and moment to moment, yet creating a whole which can and often erupts with great intensity.
The fourth album solely dedicated to her music has just recently been released, and we will be hearing from it in part II. Today we will focus on two of her earlier albums, "Ariel" on Deutsche Grammophon (2014) and "In the Light of Air" on Sono Luminus (2015).
Her music has become absolutely essential listening.
| We will start with "Aeriality" for orchestra, this rich and seething work makes me really hope she will compose some large scale orchestral works. With "Trajectories" for piano & electronics and "Ro" for flute, bass clarinet, piano, percussion and string quartet she shows she is equally adept with chamber forces. |
