Peace in Eritrea and Ethiopia: guest Teshome Hundama joins me to discuss the enormous good news from the Horn of Africa, and to spin some new tunes celebrating this wonderful event.
On July 8th one of the longest military standoffs in Africa ended with a peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Eritrea was joined with Ethiopia in 1950 and there had been a movement fighting for independence since 1958. After a three decade civil war from 1961-1991, independence was finally won and granted in a referendum from 1993. However, tensions have remained extremely high, with a number of border skirmishes since the Ethiopian government under the former prime ministers refused to officially accept the border. The much smaller Eritrea has maintained a large military force on the border equal in size from the much larger Ethiopia, and this has resulted in mobilizing the majority of Eritrea's population, crippling its economy and causing Eritreans to be one of the major sources of African migrants. True peace between these two nations has so many beneficial possibilities, both economic, and social, and cultural. This is an incredibly hopeful development and most on both sides of the border are celebrating, we will hear a number of new Eritrean and Ethiopian songs celebrating this peace.
Speaking with guest Teshome Hundama, who provided this playlist of songs for peace, many of them just recorded and released since the July 8th summit. |

A lot of solo piano to round out the show, with a couple of Ethiopians at the keys to transition from the first hour to Chopin. Marc-André Hamelin will be in Ottawa tomorrow night at the Chamberfest with a concert half solo works by Chopin and Feinburg and joined by the French Quatuor Danel in a performance of Shostakovich's incredible Piano Quintet.
