Celebrating the life and music of Hugh Masekela, the supreme South African musician who passed away this week aged 78.

Today we celebrate the life and music of the great South African musician Hugh Masekela (April 4 1939-Jan 23 2018) who for nearly 6 decades explored the intersections of Jazz and African musics, beginning in 1959 with Abdullah Ibrahim in the Jazz Epistles, recording the first ever LP by African Jazz musicians. He left South African for the US in 1960 and spent three decades as an exile fighting against Apartheid and championing Nelson Mandela. He returned to Africa to live in Botswana in 1980, but did not return to live in South Africa until Mandela was released in 1990 and Apartheid came to an end. He collaborated with many great South African musicians, American Jazz musicians, and other African musicians including collaborations in Afrofunk with Fela Kuti and the Ghanian group Hezdoleh Soundz. We will hear a wide range of selections from his long and illustrious career, starting with his 1987 anthem for Nelson Mandela "Bring Him back Home".

I saw Hugh Masekela a few years back at the Ottawa Jazz Festival. Was captivated by how crisp, vibrant and rich his trumpet and playing were. A treat to hear him live after many years of enjoying his recorded music.
