French-Egyptian Oud player Mohamed Abozekry with a return to his Egyptian roots in a pared-down album celebrating Egyptian café music. Also more from Tanya Tagaq's new release "Retribution".
Mohamed Abozekry is a young and extremely talented Egyptian Oud player who studied with the great Iraqi Oud master Naseer Shamma. He is the leader of a multi-ethnic group called Heejaz with strong jazz and Arabic influences. Their 2015 album "Ring Road" was one of my favourites that year. He has just released a new album with a new, smaller group of Egyptian musicians named Karkadé, exploring his Egyptian roots and urban café music from an earlier era. The group is a quartet with Mohamed on oud, Lotfy Abaza on violin, Hany Bedair on percussion, Mohammed Farag on ney. A simply gorgeous album.
We will also hear more from Tanya Tagaq's searing howl of rage "Retribution".

A dear friend in Fes, Morocco, sent me this short video recorded at the Moussem de Moulay Idris a few days ago. This is the extraordinary celebration of the 8th century founder of Fes which takes place every year around September/October. Tens of thousands of people come out to see the procession through the old city featuring hundreds of musicians and groups from almost every tradition of Moroccan music, with a strong focus on Sufi music. |

WOW! The Mohamed Abozekry pieces were quite something. I take it we are on to Salamat now now -- bass & piano heavy groove? Waiting to see what you choose from Tagaq's FANTASTIC new release...
