rare Persian Sufi music with Mohammad Reza Lotfi; rare Cuban piano; Marc-André Hamelin & Mozart
Today we are starting off with a true giant of Persian music, Mohammad Reza Lotfi. We will hear two excerpts from an Iranian television broadcast from the 80’s featuring Lotfi with the Nimatullahi ensemble performing Iranian Sufi music. The principal instruments are voice, setar, ney, and the thunderous Daf frame drums. The recorded sound is not ideal, yet this rarely heard music is so magnificently powerful.
We will also hear Marc-André Hamelin playing Mozart, music from Anton Webern, Guinea, Egypt and elsewhere.

| Marc-André Hamelin is performing again tonight with the NAC Orchestra Mozart's 17th piano concerto including his own striking cadenza in the exqsuitie slow movement. Hamelin is the greatest Mozart pianist I know alive today. I saw this performance last night, and I am very happy to say this is the best the NAC orchestra has sounded in nearly 20 years. Also included Sibelius' 1st symphony and Webern's Bach transcription.
