Darkness to Light; beginning Penderecki's symphony cycle
Today we'll be taking my annual Solstice journey from darkness to light through music. The journey will begin in darkness with Krysztof Penderecki's 2nd symphony. Penderecki began composing this symphony on Christmas Eve 1979 and this is likely responsible for the mysterious quotes of Silent Night which appear three times during the work. It is a dramatic, emotionally turbulent work which signaled his final and permanent break with the avant-garde music which he had previously championed.
This will also be the beginning of a symphonic cycle of Penderecki's 7 symphonies (1-8 with the exception of no. 6 which was never produced) all conducted by Penderecki.
