Today's focus will be some extraordinary music of Franz Liszt in a unique performance by pianist Nicolas Horvath. One of the pinnacles of Liszt's art is his oratorio Christus for soloists, choir and large orchestra. Liszt transcribed 5 movements for piano, and pianist Nicolas Horvath transcribed 3 others and performs them in a whole as "symphonic poem for piano". Christus covers the life of Christ from birth to his crucifixion, much like Handel's "Messiah", and makes use of all of Liszt's extreme musical language, from the rich Romanticism and soaring melody of "Die Heiligen Drei Konige" to the tortured avant-garde late music of "Tristis Est Anima Mea" (modernism which was at least 40 years ahead of its time). The result is an extremely moving, spiritual meditation by the very devout Liszt. There was no other music composed like this in the 19th century.
