John Luther Adams, Tanya Tagaq, Schnittke's Beethoven

Today's show begins with some very primal, extreme, and emotional music. Several pieces for solo percussion and processed sounds by American composer John Luther Adams surrounding a stunning and intense performance from Tanya Tagaq from her performance at this year's Polaris music awards. We also hear Beethoven's very famous violin concerto in an infamous recording with violinist Gidon Kremer. This recording featured the two cadenzas written by Alfred Schnittke which venture much further from Beethoven's musical language. They quote 20th century concertos of Berg and Bartok. I love their addition to this magnificent work.

Next week I will be celebrating 20 years on-air at CKCU with an entire show dedicated to music released in 1994! Make sure to tune in! I've come up with 2 hours of really fantastic music, but sadly there was no way I could fit in this piece from Nusrat's terrific 1994 release "The Last Prophet", so we hear it today.
