Variations on the Jazz Trio and the Carnatic Violin with new albums from the Fred Hersch Trio, the Arun Ramamurthy Trio, and a stunning recording from L. Subramaniam
Today's show is driven by Jazz and Carnatic music, primarily the violin and the trio. We hear two variations on the Carnatic violin as well as two variations on the Jazz trio. Representing Carnatic classical violin is the astonishing virtuoso L. Subramaniam, in a full performance of Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi in Raga Kirvani. His flights of improvisation are spellbounding. Representing the classic Jazz Trio of piano, bass, drums is the Fred Hersch Trio and their new album "Floating" with mostly beautiful original compositions. Bridging both these traditions is the brand new album from the Arun Ramamurthy Trio, led by American Carnatic violinist Arun Ramamurthy and joined by Perry Wortman on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums in a wonderful exploration of Carnatic and Jazz idioms. Superb!
